Claims
- 1. A process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of a smoking tobacco composition or smoking tobacco article comprising the step of adding to a smoking tobacco composition or a component of a smoking tobacco article in aroma or taste augmenting or enhancing quantity of at least one dioxolane, oxathiolane or dithiolane compound defined according to the structure: ##STR212## wherein R.sub.1 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 lower alkyl; R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 lower alkyl; X and Y are the same or different and each represents oxygen or sulfur and wherein one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and each of the other of the dashed lines represent carbon-carbon single bonds.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the material added to the smoking tobacco composition or smoking tobacco article has the structure: ##STR213##
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the material added to the smoking tobacco composition or smoking tobacco article has the structure: ##STR214##
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the composition of matter added to the smoking tobacco composition or smoking tobacco article comprises a major proportion of compounds defined according to the structure selected from the group consisting of: ##STR215## wherein in the mixture in each of the molecules one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and each of the other of the dashed lines represent carbon-carbon single bonds, said composition of matter produced according to the process comprising the steps of:
- (a) dimerization of isoamylene having the structure: ##STR216## in the presence of an acid catalyst to form a mixture containing a major proportion of a mixture of compounds defined according to the structure: ##STR217## wherein (i) at least one of R.sub.3 ' and R.sub.4 ' represents methyl; (ii) the sum of the carbon atoms in R.sub.1 ', R.sub.2 ', R.sub.3 ', R.sub.4 ' and R.sub.5 ' is 3; and (iii) R.sub.1 ' and R.sub.2 ' represent hydrogen when R.sub.5 ' is methyl;
- (b) reacting the resulting diisoamylene mixture with a compound selected from the group consisting of an alkanoyl halide having 2 or 3 carbon atoms and an alkanoic acid anhydride having 4 or 6 carbon atoms to form a mixture containing a major proportion of compounds defined according to the structure: ##STR218## wherein R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 or C.sub.2 alkyl and wherein in the mixtures in each of the molecules one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and the other of the dashed lines represent carbon-carbon single bonds; and
- (c) reacting the resulting mixture with a compound selected from the group consisting of 1,2-propylene glycol; 1,2-propylene oxide; 1,2-ethylene glycol; and 1,2-ethylene oxide at a temperature of between 0.degree. C. and 80.degree. C. in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein in the process to produce the composition of matter to be added to the smoking tobacco composition or smoking tobacco article component, the reaction between the alkanoyl halide or the alkanoic acid anhydride with the diisoamylene mixture is carried out in the presence of a Lewis acid or a mineral acid at a temperature of between 0.degree. C. and 50.degree. C. with the mole ratio of diisoamylene mixture:acylating agent being between 1:1.1 and 2:1.0 and the concentration of catalyst being between 5 and 10% by weight of the reaction mass.
- 6. A smoking tobacco composition comprising smoking tobacco and intimately admixed therewith at least one dioxolane, oxathiolane or dithiolane compound defined according to the structure: ##STR219## wherein R.sub.1 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 lower alkyl; R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 lower alkyl; X and Y are the same or different and each represents oxygen or sulfur and wherein one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and each of the other of the dashed lines represent carbon-carbon single bonds.
- 7. A smoking tobacco article comprising a cylindrically shaped body of smoking tobacco; surrounding the length of the cylindrically shaped body of smoking tobacco a wrapper and at one end of the cylindrically shaped body of smoking tobacco a filter; and in intimate contact with said filter, said wrapper or said cylindrically shaped body of smoking tobacco at least one dioxolane, oxathiolane or dithiolane compound defined according to the structure: ##STR220## wherein R.sub.1 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 lower alkyl; R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 represent hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 lower alkyl; X and Y are the same or different and each represents oxygen or sulfur and wherein one of the dashed lines represents a carbon-carbon double bond and each of the other of the dashed lines represent carbon-carbon single bonds.
