Claims
- 1. An apparatus for dewatering batches of washed laundry items, comprising:
- (a) a fluid permeable support plate (14),
- (b) an open-ended cylindrical laundry batch container (12) disposed on said plate,
- (c) a rigid circular platen (33) disposed above and dimensioned to closely fit within said container,
- (d) means (42) coupled to said platen for forcing it down into said container under a controllable degree of pressure to compress a laundry batch therein and squeeze water out through said plate, and for raising said platen out of and above said container,
- (e) an air passage (55) defined within said platen and exiting over a lower surface thereof,
- (f) a pressure hose (53) coupled to said passage for supplying pressurized air to further dewater a laundry batch when said platen is disposed within said container, and
- (g) a non-return valve (56) mounted within said air passage for preventing the egress of air and water when said platen is compressively forced down upon a laundry batch in said container.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1, comprising a plurality of air distribution channels (51) defined in the lower surface of the platen, and a perforated plate (52) underlying said channels.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the platen and the perforated plate are upwardly domed.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1, comprising transport cylinders (39, 40) for moving the platen upwards and downwards on guide columns (37, 38) between an operating position in the region of the container and a starting position above the container.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the forcing down and raising means comprises a hydraulic cylinder (42).
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the hydraulic cylinder is mounted on a yoke (34) which is slidably mounted on the guide columns (37, 38).
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein there are two guide columns (37, 38) diametrically disposed on opposite sides of the container, and there are two transport cylinders (39, 40) circumferentially spaced from said columns.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7, comprising a fixed cross-member (41) attached to and supported by the guide columns and against which the yoke may be braced.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8, comprising support rods (45, 46) upstanding from the yoke (34), and a movable locking ring (47) mounted on the cross-member (41) for providing an abutment surface for upper ends of said rods.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the support plate (14) rests on a rigid baseplate (15) formed from hollow sections.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10, comprising a fluid permeable transport belt (23) having an upper run (22) resting on the support plate (14).
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11, comprising two lifting cylinders (57, 58) for raising and lowering the container.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 10, comprising guide columns (37, 38) attached to the baseplate (15), and an open topped vessel (29) surrounding the baseplate for collecting water.
