Claims
- 1. An aqueous coating composition, comprising effective film forming amounts of:
- (a) up to about 40 parts by weight of a polyol;
- (b) a surfactant in an amount of about 0.05 parts by weight to about 15 parts by weight;
- (c) an amine selected from primary, secondary and tertiary aliphatic amines having an amine functionality of 1 to 3, and mixtures thereof;
- (d) a thermoplastic polyolefinic resin having a softening point up to about 350.degree. F.; and
- (e) the balance water,
- wherein said composition is substantially free of aromatic organic solvents.
- 2. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.
- 3. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said surfactant is an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant.
- 4. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant having about 5 to about 25 ethylene oxide groups per mole of surfactant.
- 5. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant having about 7 to about 10 ethylene oxide groups per molecule of surfactant.
- 6. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, comprising from about 3 to about 40 percent polyol.
- 7. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said resin is based on a chlorinated polyolefin resin.
- 8. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said amine is triethylamine.
- 9. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said amine is diethylamine.
- 10. The aqueous coating composition of claim 1, wherein said amine is selected from the group consisting of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, triethylamine, triethanolamine, diethanolamine, dimethylethanolamine, 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol, and mixtures thereof.
- 11. A method of coating a substrate, comprising applying to the substrate an aqueous coating composition according to claim 1.
- 12. An aqueous coating composition, comprising effective film forming amounts of:
- (a) up to about 40 parts by weight of a polyol;
- (b) a surfactant in an amount of about 0.05 parts by weight to about 15 parts by weight;
- (e) an amine selected from primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines having an amine functionality of 1 to 3, and mixtures thereof;
- (d) a thermoplastic addition polymer including maleic anhydride; and
- (e) the balance water, wherein said composition is substantially free of aromatic organic solvents.
- 13. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant.
- 14. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said surfactant is an alkoxylated nonionic surfactant.
- 15. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant having about 5 to about 25 ethylene oxide groups per molecule of surfactant.
- 16. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said surfactant is a nonionic surfactant having about 7 to about 10 ethylene oxide groups per molecule of surfactant.
- 17. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, comprising from about 3 to about 40 percent polyol.
- 18. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said resin is based on a chlorinated polyolefin resin.
- 19. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said amine is triethylamine.
- 20. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said amine is diethylamine.
- 21. The aqueous coating composition of claim 12, wherein said amine is selected from the group consisting of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, triethylamine, triethanolamine, diethanolamine, dimethylethanolamine, 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol, and mixtures thereof.
