Claims
- 1. A method of controlling the air/fuel ratio in a combustion apparatus having a chamber into which flows of air and fuel are conducted so that the resulting mixture can be combusted to provide a source of energy, said method comprising the following steps:
- establishing a rate of air flow with valve means according to a desired output of the combustion apparatus;
- measuring said air flow rate and producing a first signal systematically related to said air flow rate;
- pumping fuel into said chamber with a positive displacement fuel pump driven by a motor;
- measuring the speed of said fuel pump and producing a second signal systematically related to said speed;
- providing a ratio control signal corresponding to a selected air/fuel ratio;
- combining said first, second, and ratio control signals to produce a fuel feed control signal systematically related to the deviation of the ratio of said air and fuel flow rates from said selected air/fuel ratio; and
- utilizing said fuel feed control signal to control the speed of said motor to supply fuel to said chamber at a rate minimizing said deviation, thereby providing a flow of fuel which results in the delivery of air and fuel to said chamber in said selected air/fuel ratio.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said air flow rate is measured by actuating a frequency generator in response to the rate of the volumetric air flow, and
- changing the generated frequency into an analog electrical signal which is proportional to the generated frequency.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said air flow rate is measured by actuating a rotor driven frequency generator in response to the flow rate, and
- changing the generated frequency into an analog electrical signal which is proportional to said generated frequency; and wherein said fuel flow rate is measured by driving a second frequency generator at a rate which is proportional to said fuel flow rate and changing the generated frequency into a second analog electrical signal which is proportional to said generated frequency.
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein said combining step comprises combining one of said first and second signals with said ratio control signal to produce a product signal proportional to the product of said one signal and said ratio control signal, and differentially combining said product signal and the other of said first and second signals to produce said fuel feed control signal.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 wherein said ratio control signal is combined with said first signal.
- 6. A method according to claim 5 wherein said ratio control signal is the setting of a potentiometer to which said first signal is applied.
- 7. A method of controlling the air/fuel ratio in a combustion apparatus having a chamber into which flows of air and fuel are conducted so that the resulting mixture can be combusted to provide a source of energy, said method comprising the following steps:
- establishing a rate of air flow with valve means according to a desired output of the combustion apparatus;
- measuring said air flow rate and producing a first signal proportional to said air flow rate;
- pumping fuel into said chamber with a positive displacement fuel pump driven by a motor;
- measuring the speed of said fuel pump and producing a second signal proportional to said speed;
- providing a ratio control signal corresponding to a selected air/fuel ratio;
- combining said first, second, and ratio control signals to produce a fuel feed control signal systematically related to the deviation of the ratio of said first and second signals from a value proportional to said ratio control signal; and
- utilizing said fuel feed control signal to control the speed of said motor to supply fuel to said chamber at a rate minimizing said deviation, thereby providing a flow of fuel which results in the delivery of air and fuel to said chamber in said selected air/fuel ratio.
- 8. In a combustion apparatus having a chamber into which flows of air and fuel are conducted so that the resulting mixture can be combusted to provide a source of energy, apparatus for controlling the air/fuel ratio comprising:
- valve means for establishing a rate of air flow according to a desired output of the combustion apparatus;
- means for measuring said air flow rate by producing a first signal systematically related to said air flow rate;
- a positive displacement fuel pump for pumping fuel into said chamber;
- a motor means for driving said fuel pump;
- means for measuring the speed of said fuel pump by producing a second signal systematically related to said speed;
- means for providing a ratio controls signal corresponding to a selected air/fuel ratio;
- means for combining said first, second, and ratio control signals to produce a fuel feed control signal systematically related to the deviation of the ratio of said air and fuel flow rates from said selected air/fuel ratio; and
- means for applying said fuel feed control signal to said motor means to control the speed of said pump to supply fuel to said chamber at a rate minimizing said deviation, thereby providing a flow of fuel which results in the delivery of air and fuel to said chamber in said selected air/fuel ratio.
- 9. The combustion apparatus of claim 8 and further including means forming an operational amplifier and a loop compensation circuit for applying said fuel feed signal to said motor means for controlling said fuel flow rate.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein said means for combining comprises means for combining one of said first and second signals with said ratio control signal to produce a product signal proportional to the product of said one signal and said ratio control signal, and means for differentially combining said product signal and the other of said first and second signals to produce said fuel feed control signal.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein said ratio control signal is combined with said first signal.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein said means for providing a ratio control signal comprises a potentiometer to which said first signal is applied.
- 13. In a combustion apparatus having a chamber into which flows of air and fuel are conducted so that the resulting mixture can be combusted to provide a source of energy, apparatus for controlling the air/fuel ratio comprising:
- valve means for establishing a rate of air flow according to a desired output of the combustion apparatus;
- means for measuring said air flow rate by producing a first signal proportional to said air flow rate;
- a positive displacement pump for pumping fuel into said chamber;
- motor means for driving said fuel pump;
- means for measuring the speed of said fuel pump by producing a second signal proportional to said speed;
- means for providing a ratio control signal corresponding to a selected air/fuel ratio;
- means for combining said first, second, and ratio control signals to produce a fuel feed control signal systematically related to the deviation of the ratio of said first and second signals from a value proportional to said ratio control signal; and
- means for applying said fuel feed control signal to said motor means to control the speed of said pump to supply fuel to said chamber at a rate minimizing said deviation, thereby providing a flow of fuel which results in the delivery of air and fuel to said chamber in said selected air/fuel ratio.
