Claims
- 1. A pickup device for use with a fabric piece handling apparatus, said device comprising:
- (a) a frame;
- (b) a first opposed jaw rigidly attached at one end to said frame;
- (c) a second opposed jaw movably attached at one end to said frame; and
- (d) actuating means attached between said frame and said second opposed jaw, said actuating means adapted for moving said second opposed jaw between a first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws and a second position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an operative clamping position with respect to each other to clamp a piece of cloth therebetween, wherein said actuating means includes a first roller attached to said second opposed jaw, a second roller attached to said frame, and a fluid operated piston attached to said frame and having one free end of said piston attached to a wedge located adjacent to said first and second rollers, whereby said fluid operated piston moves said wedge between said first and second rollers, thereby moving said second opposed jaw against said first opposed jaw wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an operative clamping position with respect to each other to clamp a piece of cloth therebetween.
- 2. The device according to claim 1, further including a spring between said frame and said second opposed jaw for moving said second opposed jaw to said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws.
- 3. The device according to claim 1, further including at least one stop between said frame and said second opposed jaw for limiting an opening movement of said second opposed jaw to said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws.
- 4. The device according to claim 1, wherein said first and second jaws include a fabric contact surface having an array of fabric engaging teeth for urging a portion of said fabric piece into a bunched condition for pickup.
- 5. The device according to claim 4, wherein said array of fabric engaging teeth is "saw-tooth"-shaped.
- 6. The device according to claim 1, further including ejector means attached to said actuating means, wherein said ejector means and actuating means cooperate together to disengage a fabric piece between said pair of jaws when said second jaw is in said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position.
- 7. The device according to claim 6, wherein said ejector means is attached to said frame adjacent to said pair of opposed jaws.
- 8. The device according to claim 7, wherein said ejector means is a tube connected to a source of compressed air for providing a pulse of compressed air to disengage a fabric piece when said pair of opposed jaws are in said unobstructed open position.
- 9. A fabric piece handling apparatus, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a pickup assembly, wherein said pickup assembly includes: (i) a frame; (ii) a first opposed jaw rigidly attached at one end to said frame; (iii) a second opposed jaw movably attached at one end to said frame; and (iv) actuating means attached between said frame and said second opposed jaw, said actuating means adapted for moving said second opposed jaw between a first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws and a second position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an operative clamping position with respect to each other to clamp a piece of cloth therebetween;
- (b) an unfolder assembly adjacent to said pickup assembly, wherein said unfolder assembly includes:
- (i) a pair of pivotally mounted arms attached at one end to opposite sides of said pickup assembly;
- (ii) a horizontal bar extending between the other of the ends of said arms; and (iii) an actuator attached to at least one of said arms for moving said arms and horizontal bar in an arc beneath said pickup assembly to turn over a fabric piece held by said pickup assembly;
- (c) a magazine for supplying a stack of fabric pieces to said pickup assembly, said magazine including inner walls, outer walls, and a top, said magazine defining a plenum having a perforated aperture located in said inner wall adjacent to the upper surface of the stack of fabric pieces; and
- (d) a source of vacuum connected to said plenum for providing a stream of air through said perforated aperture adjacent to the upper surface of the stack of fabric pieces, thereby causing said fabric pieces beneath the top ply of fabric and adjacent to said perforated aperture to remain stationary and allowing the top ply of fabric to be removed by said pickup assembly.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9, further including a spring between said frame and said second opposed jaw for moving said second opposed jaw to said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 9, further including at least one stop between said frame and said second opposed jaw for limiting the opening movement of said second opposed jaw to said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said actuating means includes a first roller attached to said second opposed jaw, a second roller attached to said frame, and a fluid operated piston attached to said frame and having one free end of said piston attached to a wedge located adjacent to said first and second rollers, whereby said fluid operated piston moves said wedge between said first and second rollers, thereby moving said second opposed jaw against said first opposed jaw wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an operative clamping position with respect to each other to clamp a piece of cloth therebetween.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said magazine includes a flexible flap having one edge attached to said inner wall adjacent to said perforated aperture and the opposite edge extending to the surface of said stack of fabric pieces located in the magazine adjacent to said top.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said flexible flap is formed from a sheet of elastomeric material.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said magazine includes a platen for supporting said stack of fabric pieces.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said magazine includes a lead screw attached to the bottom surface of said platen for maintaining said stack of fabric pieces adjacent to said perforated aperture.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said first and second jaws include a fabric contact surface having an array of fabric engaging teeth for urging a portion of said fabric piece into a bunched condition for pickup.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said array of fabric engaging teeth is "saw-tooth"-shaped.
- 19. The apparatus according to claim 9, further including ejector means attached to said actuating means, wherein said ejector means and actuating means cooperate together to disengage a fabric piece between said pair of jaws when said second jaw is in said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position.
- 20. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein said injector means is attached to said frame adjacent to said pair of opposed jaws.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 20, wherein said ejector means is a tube connected to a source of compressed air for providing a pulse of compressed air to disengage a fabric piece when said pair of opposed jaws are in to unobstructed open position.
- 22. A pickup device for use with a fabric piece handling apparatus, said device comprising:
- (a) a frame;
- (b) a first opposed jaw rigidly attached at one end to said frame;
- (c) a second opposed jaw movably attached at one end to said frame;
- (d) actuating means attached between said frame and said second opposed jaw, said actuating means adapted for moving said second opposed jaw between a first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws and a second position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an operative clamping position with respect to each other to clamp a piece of cloth therebetween, and
- (e) ejector means attached to said actuating means, wherein said ejector means and actuating means cooperate together to disengage a fabric piece between said pair of jaws when said second jaw is in said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position.
- 23. The device according to claim 22 further including a spring between said frame and said second opposed jaw for moving said second opposed jaw to said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws.
- 24. The device according to claim 22, further including at least one stop between said frame and said second opposed jaw for limiting the opening movement of said second opposed jaw to said first position wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an unobstructed open position to allow a piece of cloth to bulge into a position between said pair of opposed jaws.
- 25. The device according to claim 22, wherein said actuating means includes a first roller attached to said second opposed jaw, a second roller attached to said frame, and a fluid operated piston attached to said frame and having one free end of said piston attached to a wedge located adjacent to said first and second rollers, whereby said fluid operated piston moves said wedge between said first and second rollers, thereby moving said second opposed jaw against said first opposed jaw wherein said pair of opposed jaws are in an operative clamping position with respect to each other to clamp a piece of cloth therebetween.
- 26. The device according to claim 22, wherein said first and second jaws include a fabric contact surface having an array of fabric engaging teeth for urging a portion of said fabric piece into a bunched condition for pickup.
- 27. The device according to claim 26, wherein said array of fabric engaging teeth is "saw-tooth"-shaped.
- 28. The device according to claim 22, wherein said ejector means is attached adjacent to said pair of opposed jaws.
- 29. The device according to claim 28, wherein said ejector means is a tube connected to a source of compressed air for providing a pulse of compressed air to disengage a fabric piece when said pair of opposed jaws are in said unobstructed open position.
