Gaming device having multiple selection large award bonus scheme

Abstract

A gaming device including a plurality of selections, a plurality of credit symbols associated with the selections, a plurality of awards symbols associated with the selections, and a winning combination of award symbols. A player is awarded credits when the player selects a selection having an associated credit symbol and player accumulates award symbols when the player selects a selection associated with an award symbol. The player wins a preferably large award when the player accumulates said winning combination of award symbols. The number of player selections is determined based on the player's wager in the primary game wherein the player obtains a specified number of player selections which are necessary to achieve the winning combination and thereby win the large award.

[0004] The present invention relates in general to a gaming device, and more particularly to a gaming device with a multiple selection large award bonus scheme for increasing player enjoyment and excitement.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] Gaming machines currently exist with mechanical or video reels having symbols thereon and bonus schemes in which a player has one or more opportunities to select one or more symbols from a group of symbols to receive credits or bonus values. Such gaming devices which enable players to select symbols from a group of symbols are well known. Since players are seeking more entertainment and enjoyment, it is desirable to provide players with new gaming devices with new bonus schemes, enabling players to win larger payouts while simultaneously entertaining the players.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] The present invention provides players with an opportunity to win a large payout while being entertained, by providing a gaming device and method having a multiple selection bonus scheme. A symbol is associated with each selection and the game conceals or masks which symbol is associated with each selection. When a player makes a selection, the game exhibits the symbol associated with the selection using a display device.

[0007] Most of the symbols are preferably credit symbols which provide credits to the player when selected by the player. The credit symbols may have the same or different values. At least one and preferably a plurality of symbols are award symbols. The player must obtain all or a predetermined number of the award symbols to win the large award or jackpot. It should be appreciated that the bonus scheme of the present invention preferably includes award symbols that have additional or multiple functions such as providing the player with a number of credits. It should also be appreciated that the bonus scheme may include other functional symbols (for example, credit multiplier or pick again symbols).

[0008] In one embodiment, whenever the player selects a credit symbol, the game awards the player with credits or a bonus value associated with that credit symbol and then continues the bonus round. When the player selects an award symbol, the game accumulates the award symbols, and if appropriate, implements any additional function associated with the award symbol (i.e., such as enhancing the player's total award or granting the player another pick). In the preferred embodiment, the game provides credits to the player for obtaining an award symbol.

[0009] In a preferred embodiment the player chooses all of the symbols and then presses a selection confirmation indication to reveal the symbols. The bonus scheme of the present invention preferably determines the number of player picks or selections available to the player during the bonus round based on the player's wager in the primary round. If the player's wager is equal to or above a predetermined limit (preferably the maximum wager) the game provides the player with an appropriate number of selections in the bonus round which will provide the player an opportunity to win the large award or jackpot. If the player did not wager at or above the predetermined limit, the game does not provide the player with an appropriate number of selections necessary to win the large award or jackpot.

[0010] In operation, a player makes a selection. If the game exhibits a credit symbol, preferably the game awards the player with a credit value. As long as the player has picks remaining, the player makes another selection. If any of the exhibited symbols are award symbols, the game accumulates the award symbols. If the player selects an award symbol, the game also implements any additional function associated with that symbol. This process continues until the player ultimately uses all his picks or obtains enough symbols to win the large award or jackpot.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Gaming Device and Electronics

[0022] Referring now to the drawings, a gaming device 10 of one embodiment of the present invention, which is preferably a slot machine having the controls, displays and features of a conventional slot machine is generally illustrated. Gaming device 10 is constructed so that a player can operate gaming device 10 while standing or sitting. However, it should be appreciated that gaming device 10 can be constructed as a pub-style tabletop game (not shown) which a player can operate preferably while sitting. Gaming device 10 can also be implemented as a program code stored in a detachable cartridge for operating a hand-held video game device. Also, gaming device 10 can be implemented as a program code stored on a disk or other memory device which a player can use in a desktop or laptop personal computer or other computerized platform.

[0023] Gaming device 10 can incorporate any primary game such as slot, poker or keno in addition to any of their bonus triggering events which trigger the gaming scheme of the present invention. In the preferred embodiment, the gaming device 10 incorporates a gaming scheme including a primary game and a secondary or bonus game. However, it should be appreciated that the gaming device 10 includes a primary game while the gaming scheme comprises only the secondary game. The symbols and indicia used on and in gaming device 10 may be in mechanical, electrical or video form. In one embodiment the primary game uses symbols and indicia in mechanical form and the secondary game includes only symbols in video form. It is also anticipated that the symbols in both the primary and secondary game are in video form.

[0024] As illustrated in FIGS. 1A and 1B, gaming device 10 includes a coin slot 12 and bill acceptor 14 where the player inserts money, coins or tokens. The player can place coins in the coin slot 12 or paper money in the bill acceptor 14. Other devices could be used to accept payment such as readers or validators for credit cards or debit cards. When a player inserts money in gaming device 10, a number of credits corresponding to the amount deposited is shown in a credit display 16. After depositing the appropriate amount of money, a player can begin the game by pulling arm 18, pushing play button 20 or activating any other mechanism (including a touch screen) which starts the game.

The player can increase the bet by one credit each time the player pushes the bet one button 24. Each reel 30 displays a plurality of indicia such as bells, hearts, fruits, numbers, letters, bars or other images which preferably correspond to a theme associated with the gaming device 10. Each symbol may be associated with an audio representation provided through speakers 34. If the reels 30 are in video or virtual form, the gaming device 10 preferably displays the video reels 30 at display 32 instead of at display window 28 (best viewed in FIG. 1B).

The memory device 40 can also include read only memory (ROM) 44 for storing program code which controls the gaming device 10 so that it plays a particular game in accordance with an applicable game scheme and any applicable pay tables.

Furthermore, it is anticipated that gaming device 10 could include a touch screen 46 and an associated touch screen controller 48 if the game requires input or a selection by the player. Touch screen 46 and touch screen controller 48 are connected to a video controller 50 and processor 38. A player can make decisions and input signals into the gaming device 10 by touching touch screen 46 at the appropriate places. The processor 38 can be programmed to require a player to deposit a certain amount of money in order to start the game.

[0032] It should be appreciated that although the processor 38 and memory device 40 are preferable implementations of the present invention, the present invention can also be implemented using one or more application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC's) or other hard-wired devices, (collectively referred to herein as a “processor”). Furthermore, although the processor 38 and memory device 40 preferably reside on each gaming device 10 unit, it is possible to provide some or all of their functions at a central location such as a network server for communication to a playing station such as over a local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), Internet connection, microwave link, and the like. It should be anticipated that while the present invention is in regards to a bonus round, it is equally applicable to a primary game. This type of gaming device 10 includes a program which automatically begins a secondary or bonus round (i.e., the gaming scheme”) when the player has achieved a qualifying condition in the primary game. This qualifying condition can be a particular arrangement of indicia on the display window 28. Preferably, the qualifying condition is a predetermined combination of indicia appearing on a plurality of reels 30. As illustrated in the three reel slot game shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B, the qualifying condition could be the text “BONUS” appearing in the same location on three adjacent reels during the primary game or the text “BONUS” on one reel and a predetermined bet in the primary game.

Bonus Scheme

[0035] If a player achieves a bonus triggering or qualifying condition when playing the primary game, the game or gaming device 10 automatically begins or initiates the bonus round of the present invention as indicated by block 50 in FIG. 3A.

[0036] The game displays a plurality of selections on display 32 as indicated by block 52. The selections may be images consisting of various graphics and having various sizes, shapes and colors. In one embodiment of the present invention, the selections are squares in a linear format as illustrated in FIG. 4A. For example, the winning combination could consist of: (i) symbols having the same credit (i.e., seven symbols, wherein each symbol is a 10 credit point symbol; (ii) symbols belonging to a predetermined set (i.e., seven symbols, wherein one symbol is a 10 credit point symbol, one symbol is a 20 credit point symbol; one symbol is a 30 credit point symbol, etc.); (iii) symbols belonging to a predetermined set and selected in a predetermined order (i.e., seven symbols, wherein first the 10 credit point symbol is selected, then the 20 credit point symbol is selected; the 30 credit point symbol is selected, etc.); (iv) symbols related by shape (i.e., pyramids or circles); (v) symbols related by color; (vi) symbols having one or more sounds (i.e., a trumpet or a piano), etc.

Claims

1. A gaming device comprising: a primary wagering game including a wager limit and at least one wager less than the wager limit; a secondary game which includes a plurality of player selectable selections, a plurality of value symbols associated with said selections, a plurality of award symbols associated with said selections, a winning combination of award symbols, and a jackpot award associated with said winning combination of award symbols; a display device adapted to display the selections, value symbols and award symbols to a player; and a processor which controls the primary and secondary games, communicates with the display device, provides the player a number of selections at least equal to the number of award symbols if the player wagered the wager limit in the primary game, provides the player a number of selections less than the number of award symbols in said winning combination of award symbols if the player wagered less than the wager limit in the primary game, provides a value to the player when the player chooses each of the selections having an associated value symbol, accumulates the award symbols when the player chooses each selection having an associated award symbol, and provides the player the jackpot award when the accumulated award symbols reach said winning combination of award symbols.

2. The gaming device of claim 1, which includes at least one functional symbol associated with one of the selections.

3. The gaming device of claim 2, wherein the functional symbol changes the total number of the player's selections.

4. The gaming device of claim 1, which includes a player selection confirmation indication connected to the processor which enables the player to confirm the selections chosen by the player.

5. The gaming device of claim 4, wherein the activation of said player selection confirmation indication enables the player to confirm the player's selections after the player chooses all of the player's selections before the selections are revealed.

6. A gaming device comprising: a base game including at least one wager limit and at least one wager less than the wager limit; a bonus game triggered upon the occurrence of a triggering event in the base game, said bonus game including a plurality of player selectable selections, a plurality of value symbols associated with said selections, a plurality of award symbols associated with said selections, a winning combination of award symbols and an award associated with said winning combination of award symbols; a display device adapted to display the selections, value symbols and award symbols to a player; a player selection indicator which enables the player to choose the selections; a player selection confirmation indication which enables the player to confirm the player's chosen selections; and a processor which controls the base and bonus games, communicates with the display device, the selection indicator and the selection confirmation indication, provides the player a number of selections at least equal to the number of award symbols if the player wagered the wager limit in the base game, provides the player a number of selections less than the number of award symbols if the player wagered less than the wager limit in the base game, provides a value to the player when the player chooses each of the selections having an associated value symbol, accumulates the award symbols when the player chooses each selection having an associated award symbol, and provides the player the award when the accumulated award symbols reach said winning combination of award symbols.

7. The gaming device of claim 6, which includes at least one functional symbol associated with one of the selections.

8. The gaming device of claim 7, wherein the functional symbol changes the total number of the player's selections.

9. The gaming device of claim 6, wherein the activation of said player selection confirmation indication enables the player to confirm the player's selections after the player chooses all of the player's selections.

10. A gaming device comprising: a plurality of player selectable selections displayed to the player; at least one award associated with said selections; a selection indicator which enables said player to select at least one of said selections; a selection confirmation indication which enables the player to confirm at least one selection chosen by the player with said selection indication; and a processor which controls the selection indicator and the selection confirmation indication and which provides any award to the player associated with the selections chosen and confirmed by the player.

11. The gaming device of claim 10, wherein the number of player's selections are based on a wager made by the player.

12. The gaming device of claim 10, wherein the selection confirmation indication enables the player to confirm the player's selections after the player chooses all of the player's selections.

13. A method of operating a bonus round of a gaming device, said method comprising the steps of: (a) associating a plurality of value symbols and a plurality of award symbols with a plurality of selections and displaying said selections; (b) enabling a player to choose a number of the selections at least equal to the number of said award symbols if the player wagered a wager limit in a base game; (c) enabling the player to choose a number of the selections less than the number of award symbols if the player wagered less than the wager limit in the base game; (d) providing the player an award symbol if the chosen selection is associated with one of said award symbols and accumulating said award symbol; (e) providing the player a value if the chosen selection has an associated value symbol; and (f) providing the player a jackpot award based upon the accumulated award symbols matching a winning combination of award symbols.

14. The method of claim 13, which is operated through a data network.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the data network is an internet.

16. A method of operating a bonus round of a gaming device, said method comprising the steps of: (a) associating a plurality of value symbols and a plurality of award symbols with a plurality of selections and displaying said selections; (b) enabling a player to choose a number of the selections at least equal to the number of said award symbols if the player wagered a wager limit in a base game; (c) enabling the player to choose a number of the selections less than the number of award symbols if the player wagered less than the wager limit in the base game; (d) enabling the player to confirm the chosen selections; (e) providing the player an award symbol if the chosen selection is associated with one of said award symbols and accumulating said award symbol; (f) providing the player a value if the chosen selection has an associated value symbol; and (g) providing the player a jackpot award upon the accumulation of the award symbols matching a winning combination of award symbols.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said gaming device enables the player to confirm the chosen selections after the player chooses all of the player's selections.

18. The method of claim 16, which is operated through a data network.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the data network is an internet.

20. A method of operating a game of a gaming device, said method comprising the steps of: (a) displaying a plurality of selections to a player; (b) enabling the player to choose a number of said selections; (c) enabling the player to confirm the player's chosen selections; and (d) providing at least one award associated with said confirmed chosen selections to the player.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the number of player's selections are based on a wager made by the player.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein said gaming device enables the player to confirm the chosen selections after the player chooses all of the player's selections.

23. The method of claim 20, which is operated through a data network.
