Claims
- 1. The process which comprises reacting a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3) alkyl dihydrolysergate of the formula ##STR5## with at least 2 moles of non-hydrolytic base of the class consisting of lithium tetramethylpiperidide and potassium diisopropyl amide in an inert solvent to form a 1,8-dianion of the said (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl dihydrolysergate, and then reacting said dianion with not more than one mole of an alkylating agent, R""(CH.sub.2).sub.n X wherein R"" is CH.sub.3, CH.sub.2, CN or ##STR6## X is halogen and n is 0, 1 or 2 to yield a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl 8-R"" dihydrolysergate substantially free from any 1,8-di R"" dihydrolysergate and then isolating the thus formed (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)alkyl 8-R"" dihydrolysergate in substantially pure form from the reaction mixture.
