Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a compound of the formula ##STR13## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together represent the fragment --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --;
- each R.sup.4 independently represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl optionally substituted with 1 or 2 C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy groups; and
- X, X', Y, Y', Z, and Z' each, independently represent H, F, Cl, Br, I, CN, NO.sub.2, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, phenoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio, phenylthio, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 dialkylamino, wherein each alkyl, alkoxy, and alkylthio group is optionally substituted with one or more compatible groups selected from C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylthio, F, Cl, Br, CN, and phenyl and wherein each phenyl group is optionally substituted with up to 3 groups selected from F, Cl, Br, CN, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy
- which comprises contacting thioanisole with a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl lithium reagent and an aliphatic tertiary amine in a compatible solvent to form a phenylthiomethyl lithium reagent and subsequently contacting said phenylthiomethyl lithium reagent with a compound of the formula ##STR14## wherein R.sup.4, X, X', Y, Y', Z, and Z' are defined as hereinbefore under conditions conducive to the reaction.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the alkyl lithium reagent is butyl lithium.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the process is carried out in the presence of an ether type solvent.
- 4. A method according to claim 3 wherein the ether type solvent is tetrahydrofuran.
- 5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the tertiary aliphatic amine is 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]-octane.
- 6. A method according to claim 1 wherein process is completed by heating at the reflux temperature of the mixture.
- 7. A method according to claim 1 wherein X, X', Y, Y', Z, and Z' each, independently represent H, F, Cl, Br, CN, NO.sub.2, CH.sub.3, OCH.sub.3, SCH.sub.3, CF.sub.3, or phenoxy.
- 8. A method according to claim 1 wherein at least one of X and X' represents a designated substituent other than hydrogen.
