Claims
- 1. A skin care composition in the form of an oil-in-water dispersion comprising, by weight:
- a) from about 0.1% to about 20% of a silicone component comprising a silicone gum having a molecular weight of from about 200,000 to about 4,000,000;
- b) from about 2% to about 10% of a first emulsifier capable of forming liquid crystals in water and comprising sucrose fatty acid ester and sorbitan fatty acid ester; and
- c) an additional emulsifier selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated polyol fatty acid esters and mixtures thereof.
- 2. A skin care composition according to claim 1 where the emulsifier is a blend of sorbitan stearate and sucrose cocoate.
- 3. A skin care composition according to claim 1 comprising a primary oil phase which is essentially silicone-free and a secondary oil phase comprising the silicone gum.
- 4. A skin care composition according to claim 1 comprising from about 3% to about 7% by weight of emulsifier.
- 5. A skin care composition according to claim 1, wherein the primary oil phase comprises an ingredient selected from the group consisting of mineral oil, vegetable oils, animal oils, vegetable fats, animal fats, vegetable waxes, animal waxes, fatty acid esters other than sorbitan fatty acid esters and sucrose fatty acid esters, fatty alcohols, fatty acids and mixtures thereof.
- 6. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising from about 0.1% to about 10%, by weight of the composition, of an unsaturated ingredient selected from the group consisting of hydroxy substituted C.sub.8 -C.sub.50 unsaturated fatty acids, esters of hydroxy substituted C.sub.8 -C.sub.50 unsaturated fatty acids and mixtures thereof.
- 7. A skin care composition according to claim 6 wherein the optionally hydroxy substituted C.sub.8 -C.sub.50 unsaturated fatty acid or ester thereof is cetyl ricinoleate.
- 8. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising from about 0.1% to about 20%, by weight of a humectant selected from the group consisting of polyglycerylmethacrylate lubricants, butylene glycol, panthenols, propylene glycol, hexylene glycol, hexanetriol, glucose ethers and mixtures thereof.
- 9. A skin care composition according to claim 8, wherein the humectant is selected from the group consisting of panthenols and mixtures thereof.
- 10. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising from about 0.01% to about 10%, by weight, of a gelling agent comprising a hydrophobically-modified cross-linked polymer of acrylic acid having amphipathic properties.
- 11. A skin care composition according to claim 1, wherein the silicone component is present at a level of from about 0.5% to about 15%, by weight of the composition.
- 12. A skin care composition according to claim 1, wherein the additional emulsifier is selected from the group consisting of ethoxylated fatty acid esters of glycerine, propyleneglycol, ethylene glycol, sorbitol, sorbitan, polypropyleneglycol, glucose, sucrose and mixtures thereof.
- 13. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising from about 0.1% to about 10% of a polymer selected from the group consisting of colloidaily water-soluble polyalkenyl polyether cross-linked polymers of acrylic acid and mixtures thereof.
- 14. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising from 0.1% to about 5%, by weight, phenoxyethanol.
- 15. A skin care composition in the form of an oil-in-water dispersion comprising, by weight:
- a) from about 0.1% to about 20% of a silicone component comprising a silicone gum having a molecular weight of from about 200,000 to about 4,000,000;
- b) from about 2% to about 10% of an emulsifier capable of forming liquid crystals in water and comprising sucrose fatty acid ester and sorbitan fatty acid ester; and
- c) humectant;
- wherein at least a portion of the humectant is in the form of an admixture with a particulate carrier material which is a crosslinked polymethacrylate copolymer, and wherein the weight ratio of humectant to carrier is from about 1:4 to about 3:1.
- 16. A skin care composition according to claim 15, wherein the humectant is selected from the group consisting of polyglycerylmethacrylate lubricants, butylene glycol, panthenols, propylene glycol, hexylene glycol, hexanetriol, glucose ethers and mixtures thereof.
- 17. A skin care composition according to claim 1, further comprising from about 0.1% to about 10% of a polymer selected from the group consisting of colloidally water-soluble polyalkenyl polyether cross-linked polymers of acrylic acid and mixtures thereof.
- 18. A skin care composition in the form of an oil-in water dispersion comprising, by weight:
- a) from about 0.1% to about 20% of a silicone component comprising a silicone gum having a molecular weight of from about 200,000 to about 4,000,000;
- b) from about 2% to about 10% of an emulsifier capable of forming liquid crystals in water and comprising sucrose fatty acid ester and sorbitan fatty acid ester; and
- c) from about 0.1% to about 10% of an unsaturated compound selected from the group consisting of hydroxy substituted C8-C.sub.50 unsaturated fatty acids, esters of hydroxy substituted C.sub.8 -C.sub.50 unsaturated fatty acids and mixtures thereof.
- 19. A skin care composition according to claim 18, wherein the unsaturated compound is selected from the group consisting of ricinoleic acid esters and mixtures thereof.
- 20. A skin care composition according to claim 18, further comprising from 0.1% to about 5% phenoxyethanol.
- 21. A skin care composition according to claim 18, further comprising from about 0.001% to about 0.5%, by weight, carboxymethylchitin.
