Claims
- 1. A photoimaged article having a protected image which consists of:
- A) a colored image disposed on a support; and
- B) a single, thin, transparent, flexible, nonself supporting protective layer directly on the surface of the image, wherein said layer is substantially nontacky at room temperature; wherein said layer comprises at least a major amount based on the weight of said layer of one or more thermoplastic resins having a Tg of about 35.degree. C. to about 110.degree. C.; and wherein said layer does not cohesively block at temperatures of about 50.degree. C. or less; and wherein said layer is transferable directly to said image when the layer is first disposed on a release surface of a temporary support, and said image and layer are laminated together under pressure at temperatures of between about 60.degree. C. and about 180.degree. C. and said temporary support is peeled away.
- 2. The article of claim 1 wherein the support comprises a dimensionally heat stable material.
- 3. The article of claim 1 wherein the support comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, paper and plastic coated paper.
- 4. The article of claim 1 wherein the support has a thickness of from about 1 to about 20 mils.
- 5. The article of claim 1 wherein the support is white.
- 6. The article of claim 1 wherein the support has an adhesion promoted surface on the the surface adjacent to the colored image.
- 7. The article of claim 1 wherein the colored image comprises a colorant, a binding resin, the residue of a formerly photosensitive component and optionally one or more additional ingredients selected from the group consisting of plasticizers, stabilizers, surfactants, antistatic compositions, uv absorbers, spectral sensitizers, optical brighteners, inert fillers, exposure indicators, polymerization inhibitors, oligomers, hydrogen atom donors, antihalation agents, photoactivators, and residual coating solvents.
- 8. The article of claim 1 wherein the colored image comprises cyan, yellow, magenta and black image portions.
- 9. The article of claim 1 wherein the surface of the colored image has a matte texture.
- 10. The article of claim 1 wherein the surface of the colored image has a glossy texture.
- 11. The article of claim 1 further comprising an adhesive layer between the support and the colored image.
- 12. The article of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic resin or resins in the protective layer consists essentially of one or more materials selected from the group consisting of vinyl acetal polymers and copolymers, vinyl chloride containing copolymers, and acrylic polymers and copolymers.
- 13. The article of claim 12 wherein said thermoplastic resin or resins in the protective layer comprises polyvinyl butyral.
- 14. The article of claim 1 wherein said protective layer further comprises one or more ingredients selected from the group consisting of plasticizers, uv absorbers, surfactants, antistatic compositions, optical brighteners, inert fillers, and antihalation agents.
- 15. The article of claim 1 wherein said thermoplastic resin or resins in the protective layer have a Tg of from about 50.degree. C. about 80.degree. C.
- 16. The article of claim 1 wherein said protective layer has a thickness of from about 0.2 um to about 20 um.
- 17. The article of claim 1 wherein the protective layer has a thickness of from about 0.5 to about 10 um.
- 18. The article of claim 1 wherein the protective layer has a thickness of from about 1 to about 5 um.
- 19. The article of claim 1 wherein the surface of the temporary support has a matte texture.
- 20. The article of claim 1 wherein the surface of the temporary support has a glossy texture.
