Claims
- 1. A continuous process for impregnating a polyacrylonitrile aquagel film with a totally or highly water-soluble poly (ethylene glycol) having a molecular weight within the range of from about 285 to about 7500 comprising:
- passing the aquagel film at substantially constant rate through a water solution of said poly (ethylene glycol), said aquagel containing at least about 40 weight % water uniformly dispersed in the polyacrylonitrile;
- contacting the aquagel strip with aqueous solution during a predetermined residence time in the bath;
- passing the aquagel strip from the bath while removing excess aqueous poly (ethylene glycol) therefrom; and
- metering poly (ethylene glycol) to the aqueous solution at a concentration greater than the aqueous solution of the bath at a rate substantially proportional to desired steady state treatment of poly (ethylene glycol) for the aquagel strip.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein from 7-25% by weight poly (ethylene glycol) is incorporated into the aquagel film.
- 3. In the process of producing oriented poly acrylonitrile film by forming a polymer film from a hot solution of the polymer in water soluble solvent, washing the polymer film to replace the solvent with water to form an aquagel film, stretching the aquagel to orient the polymer and drying the oriented polymer film to remove water; the improvement which comprises:
- treating the aquagel film with sufficiently totally or highly water-soluble poly (ethylene glycol) of 285-7500 molecular weight to improve the physical properties of said film.
- 4. A high nitrile addition polymer containing at least 80% acrylonitrile repeating units, said polymer being in the form of an aquagel film having absorbed therein totally or highly water-soluble poly (ethylene glycol) having a molecular weight ranging from about 285 to about 7500.
- 5. The polymer film of claim 4 containing from about 7 to about 24% of said poly (ethylene glycol).
- 6. A method for plasticizing a high nitrile addition polymer containing at least 80% acrylonitrile repeating units, said polymer being in the form of an aquagel film, comprising contacting said film with a water solution of a poly (ethylene glycol) having a molecular weight ranging from about 285 to about 7500, wherein said poly (ethylene glycol) is absorbed into said aquagel film.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein from 7-25% by weight of said poly (ethylene glycol) is incorporated into the aquagel film.
