Claims
- 1. A recombinant vaccinia virus comprising exogenous DNA encoding rabies glycoprotein G in a nonessential region of the virus genome wherein at least one open reading frame is deleted from the virus and, the open reading frame is selected from the group consisting of: J2, B13 +B14R, A26L, A56R, C7L-K1L, and I4L.
- 2. The virus of claim 1 wherein all of said open reading frames are deleted.
- 3. The virus of claim 1 wherein at least one open reading frame is deleted and, the open reading frame is selected from the group consisting of a thymidine kinase gene, a hemorrhagic region, an A type inclusion body region, a hemagglutinin gene, a host range region, and a large subunit, ribonucleotide reductase.
- 4. The virus of claim 3 wherein all of said open reading frames are deleted.
- 5. The virus according to claim 2 or 4 wherein vaccinia is of the Copenhagen strain.
- 6. The virus of claim 1 which is an NYVAC virus.
- 7. The virus of claim 1 which is vP879.
- 8. A recombinant carnarypox virus produced by
a) attenuation through multiple serial passages on chick embryo fibroblasts; b) subjecting a master seed there from to successive plaque purifications under agar; c) amplifying a plaque clone through multiple additional passages, wherein the virus contains exogenous DNA encoding rabies glycoprotein G in a nonessential region of the virus genome.
- 9. The virus according to claim 8 wherein canarypox virus is of the Rentschler strain.
- 10. The virus of claim 8 which is an ALVAC recombinant virus.
- 11. The virus of claim 8 which is vCP65.
- 12. A method for inducing an antigenic or immunological response in a carnivore against rabies virus comprising administering to said dog, cat, or other carnivore a composition comprising a virus of claim 1 or 8 in a mixture with a suitable carrier.
- 13. A composition for inducing an antigenic or immunological response comprising a virus of claim 1 or 8 in a mixture with a suitable carrier.
- 14. A method for expressing a gene product in a cell cultured in vitro comprising introducing into the cell a virus of claim 1 or 8.
