Claims
- 1. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in a well bore to reopen and latch said safety valve open and pull said safety valve from said bore, said tool comprising: a body having a bore therethrough; a plurality of radially movable flexible locking dogs on said body for coupling into a head end of said safety valve for resetting said valve and for pulling said valve from said bore; a longitudinally movable operator member within said body having side surfaces engageable with side surfaces along said locking dogs for holding said dogs at locking positions when said tool is coupled into said safety valve for resetting and for pulling said safety valve; means for moving said side surfaces on said operator member laterally to engage said locking dogs responsive to longitudinal movement of said operator member; means connected with said operator member for securing said tool in a tool string and for applying longitudinal forces to said tool from said tool string; means between said operator member and said body for holding said operator member and said body against relative movement during a first mode of operation of said tool for reopening said safety valve; means for releasing said operator member from said body for movement to a position for operation of said tool in a second mode when releasing said tool from said safety valve for retrieval from a well bore; and means for restraining relative movement between said operator member and said body for operation of said tool in a third mode when engaging said safety valve and pulling said valve from a well bore.
- 2. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 1 including a guide pin in said operator member and a guide slot in said body receiving a portion of said guide pin, said guide slot having a configuration to guide said guide pin responsive to longitudinal movement between said body and said operator member for rotating said operator member between a first release position within said locking dogs at which said locking dogs are free for radial compression and a second locking position of rotation within said locking dogs at which said operator member holds said locking dogs against compression at locked positions.
- 3. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 2 wherein said operator member includes a locking finger having a first pair of spaced side release surfaces and a second pair of spaced side locking surfaces, said side release surfaces being between said locking dogs at said first position of rotation of said operator member, and said side locking surfaces being between said dogs at said second position of rotation of said operator member.
- 4. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 3 wherein said guide slot in said body is shaped to guide said guide pin from a first release position of rotation of said probe member at a first longitudinal position of said member at which said probe member is intermediate said locking dogs to a second locking position of rotation of said member at a second longitudinal position of said member at which said probe member is aligned with said locking dogs and back to said first release rotational position of said member at a third longitudinal position of said operator member.
- 5. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 3 wherein said guide slot in said body is shaped to rotate said operator member 90 degrees from said first release position to said second locking position responsive to longitudinal movement of said operator member from a first longitudinal position to a second longitudinal position and to rotate said operator member back 90 degrees to said first position responsive to longitudinal movement of said member from said second longitudinal position to a third longitudinal position.
- 6. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said longitudinally-movable operator member includes circumferentially-spaced control fingers intermeshed with said locking dogs, said control fingers having side surfaces engageable with side surfaces of said locking dogs when said control fingers are compressed radially inwardly for expanding said locking dogs, said operator member being movable relative to said locking dogs for engaging a cam surface in said safety valve to cam said control fingers inwardly for expanding said locking dogs.
- 7. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in a well bore to reopen and latch said safety valve open and to pull said safety valve from said bore, said tool comprising: a tool housing and locking dog member having a tubular upper end portion and a birfurcated lower end portion comprising external locking dogs; a central core and locking finger member disposed for longitudinal and rotational movement within said housing and locking dog member, said core and locking finger member having a lower end portion defining a locking finger thereon provided with vertical spaced locking edge surfaces and vertical spaced release side surfaces, said release surfaces along said locking finger being between said locking dogs at a first longitudinal and rotational position of said core and locking finger member, said locking edge surfaces being positioned within said bifurcated section of said housing and locking dog member for holding said locking dogs at locked positions at a second longitudinal and rotational position of said core and locking finger member, said release surfaces being between said locking dogs at a third longitudinal and said first rotational position of said core and locking finger member; a lateral guide pin secured through said core and locking finger member and having opposite end portions projecting beyond said member; means providing oppositely disposed guide slots extending longitudinally and circumferentially along said tubular upper end portion of housing and locking dog member receiving said opposite end portions of said guide pin for rotating said guide pin and said core and locking finger member between said first locking finger release position of rotation and said second locking finger locked position of rotation responsive to longitudinal movement of said core and locking finger member within said housing and locking dog member from a first longitudinal position at which said core and locking finger member is at said first position of rotation to a second longitudinal position at which said core and locking finger member are at said second position of rotation and to a third longitudinal position at which said core and locking finger member is rotated back to said first rotational position; a locking collet having a plurality of circumferentially-spaced collet fingers secured at first ends with said housing and locking dog member and disposed around and slidable along said core and locking finger member at opposite second ends; first, second, and third annular operating flanges on said core and locking finger member spaced longitudinally along said member for coaction with said second ends of said collet fingers between said housing and locking dog member and said core and locking finger member, said first flange having a stop shoulder engageable with said second ends of said collet fingers for applying a force to said collet for urging said housing and locking dog member into said well safety valve, said second flange having a cam surface facing said first flange and having a stop shoulder facing said third flange for engaging said second ends of said collet fingers for latching said second ends of said fingers between said second and third flanges to hold said core and locking finger member at said second locking position, said third flange having a cam surface facing said stop shoulder on said second flange to permit said core and locking finger member to move within said collet and housing and locking dog member to a third release position; a support shoulder defined on said core and locking finger member between said third flange on said member and said guide pin facing said third flange; shear pin means through said housing and locking dog member engageable with said support shoulder on said member when said member is latched at said second locking position for releasably holding said member at said second locking position against movement toward said third release position; an operating skirt on said housing and locking dog member for engagement with an upper end surface on said well safety valve to support said reset and pulling tool on said valve while engaging said tool with said valve; and means for connecting said probe and locking finger member with a tool string for supporting said tool in a well bore while manipulating said tool for resetting and pulling said well safety valve.
- 8. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 7 wherein said skirt is loosely disposed on said housing and locking dog member and a spring is supported on said housing and locking dog member between a stop shoulder provided on said member and an end of said skirt for resiliently urging said skirt along said member toward said locking dog portions of said member.
- 9. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in a well bore to reopen and latch said safety valve open and to pull said safety valve from said bore, said tool comprising: a body having a bore therethrough; a plurality of circumferentially-spaced flexible locking dogs on said body for engaging a head end of said safety valve when radially expanded; a longitudinally-movable control finger member within said body having circumferentially-spaced control fingers intermeshed with said locking dogs, said control fingers having side surfaces engageable with side surfaces of said locking dogs when said control fingers are compressed radially inwardly for expanding said locking dogs, said control finger member being movable relative to said locking dogs for engaging a cam surface in said safety valve to cam said control fingers inwardly for expanding said locking dogs; an operating prong disposed within said control fingers and said locking dogs, said prong having a locking portion movable within said locking dogs to lock said dogs in expanded positions when said control fingers are radially contracted within said locking dogs, said prong having a free end extending beyond the ends of said control fingers and said locking dogs for insertion into the bore of said safety valve; a prong head supported on said prong for substantially closing the bore of said safety valve as said valve is opened and for supporting end edges of said locking dogs as said dogs are expanded by said control fingers; a handling core secured in said body having a head end for connection with a handling string for said tool in a well bore, said handling core having a flanged end within said body engageable with an end of said control finger member for manipulating said control fingers when withdrawing said tool from said safety valve after opening said safety valve; and means for releasably securing said core and said body against relative movement during manipulation of said tool, said securing means permitting said tool to operate in a first mode while reopening said safety valve, in a second mode when releasing said tool from said safety valve for retrieval from a well bore, and in a third mode when engaging said safety valve and pulling said valve from a well bore.
- 10. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in accordance with claim 9 wherein said prong head supported on the said prong is a tubular member moveably positioned on said prong for engaging said safety valve along an upper end portion thereof, said prong having an annular stop shoulder thereon and said prong head having an internal annular flange for engaging said stop shoulder on said prong for retaining said prong head on said prong while permitting said prong head to move longitudinally on said prong.
- 11. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in accordance with claim 10 wherein said means for releasably securing said core on said body against relative movement during manipulation of said tool comprises concentric shear blocks within said bore of said body around said handling core, longitudinally-spaced transverse bores through said handling core and said shear blocks and said body, and transverse shear pins adapted to fit in said transverse bores at selected positions for effecting each of said first, second, and third modes of operation of said tool.
- 12. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in accordance with claim 11 wherein said operating prong has a head end portion provided with circumferentially spaced radial guide wings for engagement between said locking dogs for orienting said prong within said body.
- 13. A reset and pulling tool for manipulating a go-devil type well safety valve in a well bore to reopen and latch said safety valve open and pull said safety valve from said bore, said tool comprising: a body having a bore therethrough; a plurality of radially movable flexible locking dogs on said body for coupling into a head end of said safety valve for resetting said valve and for pulling said valve from said bore; a longitudinally movable operator member within said body having side surfaces engageable with side surfaces along said locking dogs for holding said dogs at locking positions when said tool is coupled into said safety valve for resetting and for pulling said safety valve; means for moving said side surfaces on said operator member laterally to engage said locking dogs responsive to longitudinal movement of said operator member; means connected with said operator member for securing said tool in a tool string and for applying longitudinal forces to said tool from said tool string; means between said operator member and said body for holding said operator member and said body against relative movement during a first mode of operation of said tool for reopening said safety valve; and means for releasing said operator member from said body for movement to a position for operation of said tool in a second mode when releasing said tool from said safety valve for retrieval from a well bore.
- 14. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 13 including means for restraining relative movement between said operator member and said body for operation of said tool in a third mode when engaging said safety valve and pulling said valve from a well bore.
- 15. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 7 wherein said skirt is provided with dependent lugs for engaging and applying torque to said safety valve.
- 16. A reset and pulling tool in accordance with claim 1 wherein said operator member comprises an operating prong disposed within said control fingers and said locking dogs, said prong having a locking portion movable within said locking dogs to lock said dogs in expanded positions when said control fingers are radially contracted within said locking dogs.
