Claims
- 1. A flame retardant composition at least about 95% by weight comprised of N,N'-ethylene-bis(tetrabromophthalimide) having a yellowness index of 5 or less and 1% or less weight loss in thermogravimetric analysis to 400.degree. C.
- 2. The product of claim 1 which has a yellowness index of about 4 or less.
- 3. The product of claim 2 which has a bromine content of at least about 65% by weight.
- 4. The product of claim 3 which has a bromine content in the range of 65% to 69%, and a melting point onset above 460.degree. C.
- 5. The product of claim 4 which is at least 98% comprised of N,N'-ethylene-bis(tetrabromophthalimide).
- 6. The product of claim 5 which has an acid number of less than 1 mg/g.
- 7. The product of claim 6 which has an acid number of less than 0.5 mg/g.
- 8. A flame retardant composition which is produced by a process which comprises:
- (a) slurrying tetrabromophthalic anhydride into aqueous acetic acid;
- (b) adding ethylene diamine to the slurry thus obtained to achieve essentially a 1:2 molar ratio of ethylene diamine to tetrabromophthalic anhydride, said adding occurring with the slurry at a temperature of at least about 80.degree. C.;
- (c) reacting the product of step (b) at a temperature of at least about 120.degree. C.; and
- (d) drying the product of step (c); so as to form a white product at least 95% comprised of N,N'-ethylene-bis(tetrabromophthalimide), said product further being characterized by having a yellowness index less than 5 and a weight loss of 1% or less in thermogravimetric analysis to 400.degree. C.
- 9. The product of claim 8 which has a yellowness index of about 4 or less.
- 10. The product of claim 9 which has a bromine content of at least about 65% by weight.
- 11. The product of claim 10 which has a bromine content in the range of 65% to 69%, and a melting point onset above 460.degree. C.
- 12. The product of claim 11 which is at least 98% comprised of N,N'-ethylene-bis(tetrabromophthalimide).
- 13. The product of claim 12 which has an acid number of less than 1 mg/g.
- 14. The product of claim 13 which has an acid number of less than 0.5 mg/g.
