Claims
- 1. A compound having the formula ##STR9## wherein y is zero or one;
- R is
- hydrogen,
- halogen,
- hydroxyl,
- --OR.sub.1 where R.sub.1 is
- alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms,
- phenyl, or
- phenylmethyl,
- --NR.sub.2 R.sub.3 where R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are independently alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms;
- R.sub.4 is selected from
- --OH and the pharmaceutically acceptable metal, ammonium, and amine acid addition salts thereof,
- --OR.sub.1 where R.sub.1 is as previously defined, ##STR10## --NHCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 N[CH(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ].sub.2, and --NR.sub.6 R.sub.7 where R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are independently hydrogen or alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms; and
- R.sub.5 is hydrogen or ##STR11## where R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are independently
- hydrogen,
- halogen,
- hydroxyl,
- --OR.sub.1 where R.sub.1 is as previously defined,
- --NR.sub.10 R.sub.11 where R.sub.10 and R.sub.11 are independently hydrogen, alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms,
- or where R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are attached to adjacent carbon atoms, taken together are --OCH.sub.2 O--;
- with the proviso that when R.sub.5 is hydrogen, R.sub.4 may not be H or lower alkyl.
- 2. A compound in accordance with claim 1 wherein R is selected from hydrogen; fluorine; chlorine; hydroxy; --OR.sub.1 wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms, phenyl, or phenylmethyl; or --NR.sub.2 R.sub.3 where R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are independently alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms.
- 3. A compound in accordance with claim 1 wherein R.sub.4 is --OH, and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 4. A compound in accordance with claim 1 wherein R.sub.4 is --OR.sub.1 wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms, phenyl, or phenylmethyl.
- 5. A compound in accordance with claim 1 where R.sub.4 is ##STR12## --NHCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 N[CH(CH.sub.3).sub.2 ].sub.2 ; or --NR.sub.6 R.sub.7 where R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are independently hydrogen or alkyl of from one to six carbon atoms.
- 6. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-[4-(dimethylamino)benzoyl]-1,2,3,4-tertrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolineactetic acid and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 7. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-[4-methoxy-3-(phenylmethoxy)benzoyl]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolinepropanoic acid and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 8. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-ylcarbonyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolinepropanoic acid and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 9. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-(4-methoxybenzoyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolineacetic acid and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 10. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolineacetic acid phenylmethyl ester.
- 11. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolinepropanoic acid phenylmethyl ester.
- 12. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-(2-fluorobenzoyl)-6-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolineacetic acid phenyl ester.
- 13. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-(2-methoxybenzoyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-6-phenoxy-8-quinolinepropanoic acid and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
- 14. A compound in accordance with claim 1 having the name 1-(2-methoxybenzoyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-6-phenoxy-8-quinolinepropanoic acid phenylmethyl ester.
- 15. A pharmaceutical composition useful for reversing the effects of electroconvulsive shock-induced amnesia in a mammal comprising an effective amount of a compound in accordance with claim 1 in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 16. A method of reversing electroconvulsive shock-induced amnesia in mammals comprising administering to said mammal an effective amount of of a pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 15.

This application is a divisional of copending application Ser. No. 576,288, filed Feb. 2, 1984, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,582,909 issued Apr. 15, 1986. This application discloses and claims subject matter which relates to subject matter disclosed in copending application Ser. No. 576,242, now U.S. Pat. No. 4,530,929 issued July 23, 1985.
