Claims
- 1. In the polymerization of a monomer mass containing a monomer selected from vinyl chloride, ethylene, styrene, and methyl methacrylate and in the copolymerization of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate by subjecting said monomers or comonomers to polymerization conditions in the presence of an initiating amount of organic peroxide, the improvement in which said organic peroxide includes a compound of the formula: ##STR3## where R and R.sub.1 are alkyl which together contain up to about 10 carbon atoms, and R.sub.2 is an alkyl group having up to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 2. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein vinyl chloride monomer is polymerized.
- 3. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polymerization conditions include a temperature of not more than about 40.degree. C.
- 4. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the polymerization conditions include a temperature of not more than about 25.degree.-35.degree. C.
- 5. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said organic peroxide includes at least 2 different compounds to form a co-initiator system.
- 6. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein R and R.sub.1 are methyl.
- 7. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 or 6 wherein R.sub.2 has up to about 1 carbon atoms.
- 8. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein R is selected from methyl and ethyl and R.sub.1 has up to about 7 carbon atoms.
- 9. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxide is lauroyl 2-chloro-2-ethyl hexanoyl peroxide.
- 10. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxide is lauroyl 2-chloro-2-methyl pentanoyl peroxide.
- 11. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxide is lauroyl 2-chloro-2-methyl propionyl peroxide.
- 12. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxide is lauroyl 2-chloro-2-ethyl butyryl peroxide.
- 13. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxide is propionyl 2-chloro-2-methyl propionyl peroxide.
- 14. The improved method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the peroxide is acetyl 2-chloro-2-ethyl hexanoyl peroxide.
