Claims
- 1. A composition for inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae comprising an agronomically-acceptable carrier and, in an amount which is effective to adversely affect the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae, a compound of the formula ##STR14## wherein Y is (1) an unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (2) a substituted alkyl group having at least one hydrogen atom replaced by hydroxy, halo, cyano, alkylamino, dialkylamino, phenylamino, halophenylamino, carboxy, carbalkoxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, or carbamoxy, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the substituted alkyl group does not exceed 18,
- (3) an unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkenyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,
- (4) unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkynyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,
- (5) an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl group having a 3 to 6 carbon atom ring and up to 12 carbon atoms,
- (6) an unsubstituted or a halo-, lower alkyl-, or lower alkoxy-substituted aralkyl group wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the aralkyl group does not exceed 10, or
- (7) an unsubstituted or a halo-, nitro-, lower alkyl-, or lower carbalkoxy-, substituted aryl group wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the aryl group does not exceed 10,
- R is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group, and
- R' is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group or a salt of a compound of the above formula with a strong acid.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein Y is an unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 which comprises, in addition, a surfactant.
- 5. A composition for inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae comprising an agronomically-acceptable carrier and, in an amount which is effective to adversely affect the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae, a compound of the formula ##STR15## wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group having a 3 to 6 carbon atom ring and up to 12 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl group of up to 10 carbon atoms, or an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group of up to 10 carbon atoms,
- R is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group, and
- R' is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group or a salt of a compound of the above formula with a strong acid.
- 6. A method for inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae in a locus subject to contamination by bacteria, fungi, or algae, which comprises incorporating onto or into the locus, in an amount which is effective to adversely affect the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae, a compound of the formula ##STR16## wherein Y is (1) an unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (2) a substituted alkyl group having at least one hydrogen atom replaced by hydroxy, halo, cyano, alkylamino, dialkylamino, phenylamino, halophenylamino, carboxy, carbalkoxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, or carbamoxy, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the substituted alkyl group does not exceed 18,
- (3) an unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkenyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,
- (4) unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkynyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,
- (5) an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl group having a 3 to 6 carbon atom ring and up to 12 carbon atoms,
- (6) an unsubstituted or a halo, lower alkyl-, or lower alkoxy-substituted aralkyl group wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the aralkyl group does not exceed 10, or
- (7) an unsubstituted or a halo-, nitro-, lower alkyl-, or lower carbalkoxy-, substituted aryl group wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the aryl group does not exceed 10,
- R is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group, and
- R' is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group or a salt of a compound of the above formula with a strong acid.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the locus is an aqueous medium.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the compound or salt is incorporated in the range of 0.1 to 10,000 parts per million parts by weight.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein Y is an unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein R is hydrogen.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein R' is hydrogen.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein R' is halogen.
- 13. The method of claim 8 wherein Y is a n-octyl group, R is hydrogen, and R' is hydrogen.
- 14. The method of claim 8 wherein Y is a methyl group, R is hydrogen, and R' is chlorine.
- 15. The method of claim 8 wherein Y is an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl group.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein Y is a cyclohexyl group, R is chlorine, and R' is chlorine.
- 17. The method of claim 8 wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein Y is a chlorophenyl group, R is a methyl group, and R' is chlorine.
- 19. The method of claim 8 wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl group.
- 20. The method of claim 6 wherein the locus is a cutting oil formulation comprising a cutting oil, water, and an emulsifying agent.
- 21. The method of claim 6 wherein the locus is a water-cooling system.
- 22. The method of claim 6 wherein the locus is a solid protective or decorative film.
- 23. The method of claim 6 wherein the locus is fabric, leather, paper, or wood.
- 24. The method of claim 6 wherein the locus is laundry wash water.
- 25. A method of inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae which comprises contacting the bacteria, fungi, or algae, in an amount which is effective to adversely affect the growth of the bacteria, fungi, or algae, with a compound of the formula ##STR17## wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group having a 3 to 6 carbon atom ring and up to 12 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl group of up to 10 carbon atoms, or an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group of up to 10 carbon atoms,
- R is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group, and
- R' is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group or a salt of a compound of the above formula with a strong acid.
- 26. A method of inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae which comprises contacting the bacteria, fungi, or algae, in an amount which is effective to adversely affect the growth of the bacteria, fungi, or algae, with a compound of the formula ##STR18## wherein Y is (1) an unsubstituted alkyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, (2) a substituted alkyl group having at least one hydrogen atom replaced by hydroxy, halo, cyano, alkylamino, dialkylamino, phenylamino, halophenylamino, carboxy, carbalkoxy, alkoxy, aryloxy, or carbamoxy, wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the substituted alkyl group does not exceed 18,
- (3) an unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkenyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,
- (4) unsubstituted or halo-substituted alkynyl group of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,
- (5) an unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl group having a 3 to 6 carbon atom ring and up to 12 carbon atoms,
- (6) an unsubstituted or a halo-, lower alkyl-, or lower alkoxy-substituted aralkyl group wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the aralkyl group does not exceed 10, or
- (7) an unsubstituted or a halo-, nitro-, lower alkyl-, or lower carbalkoxy-, substituted aryl group wherein the total number of carbon atoms in the aryl group does not exceed 10.
- R is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group, and
- R' is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group of a salt of a compound of the above formula with a strong acid.
- 27. A method for inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae in a locus subject to contimatination by bacteria, fungi, or algae, which comprises incorporating onto or into the locus, in an amount which is effective to adversely affect the growth of bacteria, fungi, or algae, a compound of the formula ##STR19## wherein Y is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or substituted cycloalkyl group having a 3 to 6 carbon atom ring and up to 12 carbon atoms, an unsubstituted or substituted aralkyl group of up to 10 carbon atoms, or an unsubstituted or substituted aryl group of up to 10 carbon atoms,
- R is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group, and
- R' is hydrogen, halogen, or a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group or a salt of a compound of the above formula with a strong acid.
