Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula:
- 2. A compound of claim 1 wherein R is a C1- C20 linear or branched alkenyl.
- 3. A compound of claim 1 wherein R is a C5-C7 cycloalkenyl.
- 4. A compound of claim 1 wherein R is benzoyl, a hydroxy-substituted benzoyl or an alkoxy-substituted benzoyl.
- 5. A compound of claim 2 wherein R is propenyl, butenyl, pentenyl, hexenyl, octenyl, decenyl, dodecenyl or octadecenyl.
- 6. A compound of claim 3 wherein R is cyclopentenyl, cyclohexenyl or cycloheptenyl.
- 7. A compound of claim 4 wherein R is benzoyl, hydroxybenzoyl, methoxybenzoyl or ethoxybenzoyl.
- 8. A compound of claim 1 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octadecyl thiourea, 1 -(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octyl thiourea, 1 -(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(1 -propenyl) thiourea, 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-benzyl thiourea or 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) thiourea.
- 9. A compound of claim 8 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octadecyl thiourea.
- 10. A compound of claim 8 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octyl thiourea.
- 11. A compound of claim 8 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(1-propenyl) thiourea.
- 12. A compound of claim 8 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-benzyl thiourea.
- 13. A compound of claim 8 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) thiourea.
- 14. A composition comprising a base lipid or oil supplemented with an oxidative stability-enhancing amount of a compound of the formula:
- 15. A composition of claim 14 wherein R is a C1- C20 linear or branched alkenyl.
- 16. A composition of claim 14 wherein R is a a C5 - C7 cycloalkenyl.
- 17. A composition of claim 14 wherein R is benzoyl, a hydroxy-substituted benzoyl or an alkoxy-substituted benzoyl.
- 18. A composition of claim 14 wherein the base lipid or oil is supplemented with from about 0.01 wt. % to about 5.0 wt. % of the compound, based on the total weight of the base lipid or oil.
- 19. A composition of claim 18 wherein the base lipid or oil is supplemented with from about 0.05 wt. % to about 2.0 wt. % of the compound.
- 20. A composition of claim 19 wherein the base lipid or oil is supplemented with from about 0.1 wt. % to about 1.0 wt. % of the compound.
- 21. A composition of claim 14 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octadecyl thiourea, 1 -(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octyl thiourea, 1 -(3 -methoxybenzyl)-3-( 1 -propenyl) thiourea, 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-benzyl thiourea or 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) thiourea.
- 22. A composition of claim 21 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octadecyl thiourea.
- 23. A composition of claim 21 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octyl thiourea.
- 24. A composition of claim 21 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(1-propenyl) thiourea.
- 25. A composition of claim 21 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-benzyl thiourea.
- 26. A composition of claim 21 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) thiourea.
- 27. A composition of claim 14 wherein the base lipid or oil is a seed oil or vegetable oil.
- 28. A composition of claim 14 wherein the base lipid or oil is meadowfoam oil, peanut oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, high oleic sunflower oil, milkweed seed oil, rapeseed oil, palm oil, olive oil, jojoba wax ester, jojoba oil, lecithin or another vegetable oil.
- 29. A composition of claim 28 wherein the base lipid or oil is jojoba oil, meadowfoam oil, high oleic sunflower oil, soybean oil or milkweed seed oil, and wherein the base lipid or oil is supplemented with from about 0.1 wt. % to about 1.0 wt. % of the compound.
- 30. A composition of claim 14 wherein the base lipid or oil contains one or more benzylamine or N-substituted benzylamine compounds.
- 31. A composition of claim 30 wherein the base lipid or oil is meadowfoam seed oil.
- 32. A composition of claim 14 wherein the base lipid or oil is also supplemented with an oxidative stability-enhancing amount of one or more benzylamine or N-substituted benzylamine compounds.
- 33. A composition of claim 14 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 10% greater than an Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil prior to supplementation with the compound when an Oxidative Stability Index test is carried out at a temperature between about 110° C. and about 130° C.
- 34. A composition of claim 33 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 100% greater than the Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil.
- 35. A composition of claim 34 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 200% greater than the Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil.
- 36. A composition of claim 35 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 500% greater than the Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil.
- 37. A composition of claim 36 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 800% greater than the Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil.
- 38. A composition of claim 37 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 1,000% greater than the Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil.
- 39. A composition of claim 38 wherein the composition exhibits an Oxidative Stability Index value of at least about 1,500% greater than the Oxidative Stability Index value of the base lipid or oil.
- 40. A method for enhancing the oxidative stability of a base lipid or oil comprising the step of combining the base lipid or oil with an oxidative stability-enhancing amount of compound of the formula:
- 41. A method of claim 40 wherein the base lipid or oil is combined with from about 0.05 wt. % to about 2.0 wt. % of the compound.
- 42. A method of claim 41 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octadecyl thiourea, 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octyl thiourea, 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(1-propenyl) thiourea, 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-benzyl thiourea or 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) thiourea.
- 43. A composition of claim 42 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octadecyl thiourea.
- 44. A composition of claim 42 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-octyl thiourea.
- 45. A composition of claim 42 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(1-propenyl) thiourea.
- 46. A composition of claim 42 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-benzyl thiourea.
- 47. A composition of claim 42 wherein the compound is 1-(3-methoxybenzyl)-3-(4-methoxybenzoyl) thiourea.
