Claims
- 1. A compound of Formula I ##STR65## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof wherein: Y is C(R.sup.6)(R.sup.7);

- (c) a mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-substituted heterocycloalkyl group of 5, 6 or 7 members or a benzoheterocycle wherein said heterocycloalkyl or benzoheterocycle contains 1 or 2 heteroatoms selected from O, S, or N and optionally contains a carbonyl group or a sulfonyl group, and wherein said substituents are independently selected form the group consisting of

- 14. A pharmaceutical composition for treating an inflammatory disease susceptible to treatment with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent comprising:
- a non-toxic therapeutically effective amount of a compound according to claim 1, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 15. A method of treating an inflammatory disease susceptable to treatment with an non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent comprising:
- administration to a patient in need of such treatment of a non-toxic therapeutically effective amount of a compound according to claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 16. A method of treating cyclooxygenase mediated diseases advantageously treated by an active agent that selectively inhibits COX-2 in preference to COX-1 comprising:
- administration to a patient in need of such treatment of a non-toxic therapeutically effective amount of a compound according to claim 1.
- 17. An anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical formulation comprising an acceptable, anti-inflammatory amount of a compound of formula (I), as defined in claim 1, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 18. A compound of Formula I ##STR66## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof wherein: Y is C(R.sup.6)(R.sup.7);

- (7) C.sub.1-6 fluoroalkyl, including CF.sub.3,

- (9) --C(R.sup.5)(R.sup.6)--OH,

- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C.sub.1-10 alkyl;

- R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are independently
- (a) hydrogen,
- (b) unsubstituted or mono- or di-substituted phenyl or unsubstituted or mono- or di-substituted benzyl or unsubstituted or mono- or di-substituted heteroaryl or mono- or di-substituted heteroarylmethyl, wherein said substituents are independently selected from the group consisting of:
- (1) halo,
- (2) C.sub.1-10 alkyl,
- (3) C.sub.1-10 alkoxy,
- (4) C.sub.1-10 alkylthio,
- (5) CN,
- (6) CF.sub.3,
- (7) N.sub.3,
- (8) --C(R.sup.14)(R.sup.15)--OH, and

- (3) C.sub.1-10 alkoxy,
- (4C.sub.1-10 alkylthio,
- (5) CN,
- (6) CF.sub.3,
- (7) N.sub.3,

- each R.sup.12 or R.sup.13 is independently selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) hydrogen, and
- (b) C.sub.1-10 alkyl,
- or R.sup.12 and R.sup.13 together with the atom to which they are attached form a saturated monocyclic ring of 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 atoms;
- R.sup.14 and R.sup.15 are independently selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) hydrogen, and
- (b) C.sub.1-10 alkyl, or
- R.sup.14 and R.sup.15 together with the carbon to which they are attached form a carbonyl, --C(.dbd.S)--, or a saturated monocyclic carbon ring of 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 atoms;
- each R.sup.17 is independently selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) hydrogen and
- (b) R.sup.18 ; and
- each R.sup.18 is independently selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) C.sub.1-10 alkyl,
- (b) --C.sub.1-10 alkyl-CO.sub.2 H,
- (c) C.sub.1-10 alkyl-NH.sub.2,
- (d) phenyl or mono-, di- or tri-substituted phenyl wherein the substituents are independently selected from halo, C.sub.1-10 alkyl, C.sub.1-10 alkoxy, C.sub.1-10 alkylthio, C.sub.1-10 alkylCO.sub.2 H, C.sub.1-10 alkylNH.sub.2, CN, CO.sub.2 H and CF.sub.3,

- 19. A compound according to claim 1, which is 2-(3,5-diflurorophenyl)-3-(4-methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-2-cyclopenten-1-ol.
- 20. A compound in accordance with claim 1 selected from the group consisting of: 2-(4-Fluorophenyl)-3-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-2-cyclopenten-1-ol, 3-(4-(Methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-2-phenyl-2-cyclopenten-1-ol and 2-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-3-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-2-cyclopenten-1-ol.
