Claims
- 1. A method for treating elevated intraocular pressure which comprises topically applying to an affected eye an intraocular pressure lowering effective amount of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor of the formula: ##STR2## or an ophthalmologically acceptable salt thereof.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor is administered in a polymeric insert.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 where said insert comprises from 0.01 to 35% by weight of said 5-hydroxy-2-benzothiazolesulfonamide.
- 4. A method according to claim 2 wherein the polymer is hydroxypropylcellulose.
- 5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the compound is administered in an ointment base.
- 6. A method according to claim 1 wherein said compound is administered as a 0.01 to 5% by weight preparation of the compound in a liquid vehicle.
- 7. An ophthalmic composition for the topical treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension comprising an intraocular pressure lowering effective amount of a compound having the formula: ##STR3## including pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and an ophthalmologically acceptable carrier.
- 8. The compound 5-hydroxy-2-benzothiazolesulfonamide or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
