The present invention relates to a support base for attaching a tile to a wall structure, and more particularly to a support base as defined in the preamble of the independent claim 1.
The present invention further relates to a tile joint for connecting tiles to a support base, and more particularly to a tile joint as defined in the preamble of the independent claim 9.
The present invention also relates to a method of attaching tiles to a wall structure, and more particularly to a method as defined in the preamble of the independent claim 21.
It is known that tiles can fixed to one another by adding mortar between the tiles. Also known from the prior art are back plates having grippers protruding from the back plates. At least one surface of a tile has a recess which can be filled with adhesive mass that secures the tile. The grippers are positioned such that they are embedded in the adhesive mass. However, the gripper is not in straight contact with the tile.
One of the problems associated with the prior art is that the tiles always need the adhesive mass in order to form a connection with the back plate and when constructing the façade the tiles do not remain in place without the adhesive mass but the adhesive mass must be applied at the same time.
An object of the present invention is to alleviate the problems relating to the prior art and to provide an efficiently constructed outer wall structure having a moisture controlled structural background. The objects of the invention are achieved by a support base, a tile joint and a method for attaching tiles to a wall structure which are characterized by what is stated in the independent claims. The preferred embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the dependent claims.
The invention is based on the idea of providing a support base in which tiles can be connected such that the tiles and the support base as well as mortar provided between tiles form a form locking connection to secure the attachment of tiles to the support surface. The support surface itself is attached to the wall structure in which the outer surface is provided through the tile assembly.
The invention relates to a support base for attaching a tile to a wall structure. The tile in the context of this application can be a brick or other facing material such as natural stone, ceramic tile or terracotta. However, the tile should be such that a groove can be provided on the sides of the tile or at least on one side of the tile. A support base according to the invention has a front surface and a back surface, which the back surface is arranged to be attached to the wall structure. The support base is preferably made of metal and most preferably of steel. The support base comprises a gripper arrangement protruding from the front surface. The gripper arrangement or at least part of the gripper arrangement is preferably a fixed part of the support base and formed of the support base for example by punching it from the support base and bending it into a desired shape. The gripper arrangement comprises a first locking part arranged to connect the tile to the support base and a second form locking part arranged to connect mortar to the support base. The connection between the first locking part and the tile is a mechanical connection.
The gripper arrangement comprises a gripper which the gripper comprises a gripper arm protruding from the support base to a first direction away from the front surface of the support base. The gripper further comprises the first locking part for connecting the tile to the support base. The first locking part is arranged to extend from the gripper arm to a second direction transverse to the first direction. The gripper further comprises the second form locking part for forming a connection between the gripper and mortar. The second form locking part is arranged to extend transversely in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base. Although the gripper is referred in a singular form the support base comprises multiple grippers protruding from the support base.
In an embodiment of the support base the second form locking part is arranged to extend from the gripper arm to a third direction opposite to the second direction. Alternatively, the second form locking part is arranged to extend from the gripper arm to a third direction different than the second direction. Alternatively, the second form locking part is arranged to extend from the gripper arm to the second direction at a different distance from the support base than the first locking part.
In another embodiment of the support base the gripper arm is arranged to form the second form locking part by extending from the support base in a direction transverse in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base. In this embodiment the gripper arm itself is at the same time the second form locking part.
In an embodiment of the support base the gripper is integral to the support base such that the gripper is formed from the support base.
In an embodiment of the support base the support base comprises a first gripper for forming a connection with a first side of the first tile for connecting the first tile to the support base and a second gripper for forming a connection with a second side of the second tile for connecting the second tile to the support base such that the first side of the first tile and the second side of the second tile are facing each other. In other words, the support base comprises a first gripper and a second gripper such that the first gripper is connected to the first tile and the second gripper is connected to the second tile. In an embodiment of the support base the support base comprises first and second grippers such that the first tile is connected between the first and second grippers of the support base or alternatively the first tile is connected between the first gripper of one support base and the second gripper of another gripper base, in which case the tile is arranged to extend over a seam of the support bases.
In an embodiment of the support base the first gripper and the second gripper are provided in the support base at different levels in height direction of the support base. Alternatively, the first gripper and the second gripper are provided in the support base at different levels in height direction of the support base and spaced apart in width direction of the support base, which means that the first gripper and the second gripper are not facing each other in the support base.
In an embodiment of the support base the gripper arrangement further comprises a mortar gripper arranged to connect mortar to the support base. The mortar gripper is arranged to protrude from the support base and extend transversely in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base or part of the mortar gripper is arranged to extend transversely in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base.
In the embodiment of the gripper arrangement comprising the mortar gripper, said mortar gripper is solely meant to provide a connection between the mortar and the support base through the mortar gripper. Therefore, there is a separate gripper for the connection between the tile and the support base.
In the most preferable embodiment of the invention the same gripper is arranged to connect both the tile and the mortar. The joint between two tiles can be so narrow that there is not enough space for a separate gripper for the tile and a separate mortar gripper, especially when there are two separate grippers for the adjacent tiles. Advantage with this embodiment of the invention is that the same gripper is arranged to connect the tile both to mortar and to the support base.
In an embodiment of the invention the first locking part is a first form locking part forming a form locking connection with the tile. In this embodiment of the invention the first form locking part is preferably such that it is to be provided in a groove of the tile.
In another embodiment of the invention the first locking part is a first spring locking part forming a spring locking connection with the tile. In this embodiment of the invention the first spring locking part is preferably connecting a side surface of the tile such that a spring force is generated between the first spring locking part and the side surface of the tile.
The support base is preferably a longitudinal planar or substantially planar plate having a top edge and bottom edge defining the height of the support base and side edges defining the width of the support base. The height of the support base is typically smaller than the length. The gripper may be a continuous gripper or a discontinuous gripper extending partially or in portions extending between side edges of the support base or alternatively extending between the top edge and the bottom edge. The support base may be attached to the wall structures horizontally or vertically.
The invention relates to a tile joint for connecting tiles to a support base, which the support base is attachable to a wall structure. The tile joint comprises a first gripper and a first tile. The first gripper comprises a gripper arm protruding from a front surface of the support base and a first locking part arranged to extend from the gripper arm. The first locking part of the first gripper is connected to the first tile for mechanically locking the first tile to the support base.
In an embodiment of the invention the first locking part is a first form locking part and the first tile comprises a first groove extending from a first side of the first tile inwards into the first tile. The first form locking part of the first gripper is arranged into the first groove of the first tile to form a form locking connection between the first tile and the support base. In other words, the tile is connected through the groove in the first side of the first tile and the first form locking part of the gripper to the support base. The first gripper with the gripper arm and the first form locking part is arranged to perform as a spring when connecting the tile to the first form locking part.
In another embodiment of the invention the first locking part is a first spring locking part and the first tile having a first side toward the first spring locking part. The first spring locking part is forming a spring locking connection between the first tile and the support base.
The tile joint further comprises mortar and the first gripper further comprises a second form locking part extending from the gripper arm to a second direction transverse to the first direction, or the gripper arm of the first gripper forms a second form locking part by extending from the support base transversely in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base. The second form locking part of the first gripper is forming a form locking connection between the first gripper and mortar. In other words, the tile joint according to the invention is arranged to connect tiles to the support base through two different locking connections, in which the first locking connection is performed between the groove of the tile and the first form locking part of the gripper or between the side surface of the tile and the first spring locking part of the gripper and the second form locking connection is performed between the mortar provided between tiles and the second form locking part extending from the gripper arm of the gripper. In still other words, both the tile and the mortar are mechanically connected to the support base.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the tile joint further comprises mortar and a mortar gripper protruding from the front surface of the support base. At least part of the mortar gripper is arranged to extend transversely in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base such that the mortar gripper is arranged to a form locking connection between the mortar and the support base. The mortar gripper is a separate gripper for mortar only.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the tile joint further comprises a second gripper having a gripper arm protruding from a front surface of the support base and a first form locking part arranged to extend from the gripper arm and a second tile. The first locking part of the second gripper is connected to the second tile for mechanically locking the second tile to the support base.
In an embodiment of the invention the first locking part of the second gripper is a first form locking part and the second tile comprising a second groove extending from a second side of the second tile inwards into the second tile. The first form locking part is arranged into the second groove of the second tile to form a form locking connection between the second tile and the support base.
In another embodiment of the invention the first locking part of the second gripper is a first spring locking part and the second tile having a second side toward the first spring locking part. The first spring locking part is forming a spring locking connection between the second tile and the support base.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the tile joint further comprises mortar, and the second gripper further comprises a second form locking part extending from the gripper arm to a second direction transverse to the first direction; or the gripper arm of the second gripper forms a second form locking part by extending from the support base transversely in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base; and the second form locking part of the second gripper forming a form locking connection between the second gripper and mortar.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the first locking part of the first gripper and the first locking part of the second gripper are arranged to extend in the opposite directions. Alternatively, the first locking part of the first gripper and the first locking part of the second gripper are arranged to extend in a direction away from each other. Alternatively, the first locking part of the first gripper is arranged to extend toward the first tile and the first locking part of the second gripper is arranged to extend toward the second tile.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the first side of the first tile and the second side of the second tile are arranged to form together with the support base a channel for mortar and the second form locking part of the first gripper and the second form locking part of the second gripper are provided in the channel such that the mortar and the second form locking parts are forming a form locking connection with the mortar within the channel. In other words, the second form locking parts are arranged to protrude from the support base within a channel formed by the first side of the first tile and the second side of the second tile, i.e. two adjacent tiles having sides facing each other form a channel between the tiles such that the second form locking parts of the first gripper and the second gripper extend within that channel away from the front surface of the support base.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the second form locking part of the first gripper and the second form locking part of the second gripper are forming an integral form locking part extending between the gripper arm of the first gripper and the gripper arm of the second gripper. In other words, the first and second gripper are arranged such that the second form locking parts extending from the gripper arms of the first and second grippers engage to form a common second form locking part.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the first gripper and the second gripper are arranged to protrude as a single gripper from the support base thereafter splitting into two gripper arms. This means that there is only one gripper which comprises two gripper arms which both have the first locking part and the second form locking part which the second form locking part may be a common second form locking part or separate second form locking parts.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the first gripper has a gripper arm comprising a first form locking part arranged to extend from the gripper arm toward the first tile and provided into the first groove of the first tile to form a form locking connection between the first tile and the support base, and another first form locking part arranged to extend from the gripper arm toward the second tile and provided into the second groove of the second tile to form a form locking connection between the second tile and the support base. In other words, there is only one gripper providing a form locking connection with the first tile and the second tile.
In an embodiment of a tile joint, the second form locking part is formed from the gripper arm by extending from the support base in a direction transverse in relation to a direction orthogonal to the front surface of the support base, which means the gripper arm is at the same time the second form locking part and provides a connection for the first form locking part.
According to the method of attaching tiles to a wall structure, the method comprises the step of providing a support base having a front surface and a back surface, which the front surface has a first gripper protruding from the front surface and a second gripper protruding from the front surface. The first gripper comprises a gripper arm and a first form locking part extending from the gripper arm, and the second gripper comprises a gripper arm and a first form locking part extending from the gripper arm. The method further comprises the steps of attaching the back surface of the support base to the wall structure; providing a first tile having a front surface, a back surface and side surfaces, the first tile further comprising a first groove on a first side of the tile and a second groove on a second side of the tile, which the second side is opposite to the first side; and connecting the first groove of the first tile to the first form locking part of the first gripper for forming a form locking connection between the first tile and the support base.
In an embodiment of the method according to the invention, the method further comprises the step of connecting the second groove of the first tile to the first form locking part of the second gripper, or alternatively connecting the second groove of the first tile to the first form locking part of the second gripper of an adjacent support base. In both ways, the connection is made such that the back surface of the first tile is provided against the front surface of the support base. In other words, when connecting the second groove of the tile the first form locking part of the second gripper the tile is pushed toward the front surface of the support base such that the back surface of the tile will be provided against the front surface of the support base.
In a preferable embodiment of the invention the method comprises a step of connecting the tile to the first form locking part of the first gripper and to the first form locking part of the second gripper by pushing the tile toward the support base such that the first form locking parts form connection with the tile. In an embodiment of the invention the first form locking parts form the connection with the tile at the same time or substantially at the same time.
In an embodiment of the method, the method further comprises the steps of providing a second tile having a front surface, a back surface and side surfaces, the second tile further comprising a first groove on a first side of the tile and a second groove on a second side of the tile, the second side is opposite to the first side; and connecting the second groove of the second tile to the first form locking part of the second gripper for forming a form locking connection between the second tile and the support base.
In an embodiment of the method, the first gripper further comprises a second form locking part extending from the gripper arm and the second gripper further comprises a second form locking part extending from the gripper arm; the method further comprises the step of providing mortar to a channel between the first side of the first tile and the second side of the second tile such that a form locking connection is formed between the mortar and the second form locking parts.
An advantage of the invention is that the support bases are easily and effectively connected to a wall structure and at the same time they are providing a ventilated and moisture controlled structural backing system for tiles. The tiles can then be inserted in and due to the spring force caused by the first form locking parts toward the tiles, the tiles remain in place and the mortar can be applied between all the tiles at the same work phase. Another advantage of the invention is that both the tile and the mortar are form locked to the support base which means that they are both mechanically connected to the metal frame which is formed by the support bases and which the metal frame is connected to the structures of a building.

The tiles 100, 200 have a front surface 105 and a back surface 106 and preferably four sides 101, 102, 104, 105. The tiles 100, 200 preferably comprise grooves 110, 120, 210, 220 on at least part of their sides.
The support base 1 comprises a gripper 2, 3 protruding from the front surface 11 of the support base 1. The gripper 2, 3 comprises a gripper arm 20, 30 extending from the support base 1 and a first form locking part 21a, 31a extending toward the tile 100, 200 to be placed next to the gripper 2, 3. The gripper further comprises a second form locking part 22, 32 for forming a form locking connection with mortar. The first form locking parts 21a, 31a provide a spring force between the gripper 2, 3 and the tile 100, 200 such that the tile 100, 200 remain in place against the front surface of the support base 1 and is mechanically connected to the support base 1 already before there is any mortar 300 provided between the tiles 100, 200. The joint 10 between the tiles 100, 200 and the support base 1 is formed of two different form locking connections which are provided through the gripper 2, 3 protruding from the support base 1 and which comprises two form locking parts 21a, 31a, 22, 32: the first form locking part 21a, 31a forming a form locking connection between the tile 100, 200 and the support base 1 and the second form locking part 22, 32 forming a form locking connection with the mortar and the support base 1.
