Abstract
An abrasive belt includes a net member having a number of cords secured together for forming a number of eyelets between the cords, and a number of abrading particles applied onto the net member for engaging with a work piece and for abrading the work piece and for abrading cut chips from the work piece and for allowing the cut chips to be received and engaged in the eyelets of the net member. The abrading particles may be applied onto an outer portion or an inner portion of the net member. A base member may be attached or engaged in the net member for supporting the net member which may include a number of longitudinal cords and lateral cords secured together.
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to an abrasive belt, and more particularly to an abrasive belt including a number of spaces or compartments formed therein for receiving the dust or cut chips and for facilitating the sanding or grinding or abrading operation and for increasing the working life for the abrasive belt.

2. Description of the Prior Art

Typical abrasive belts or members comprise an endless sand belt for engaging around the rollers or pulleys of a sanding or grinding or abrading machine and for sanding or grinding or abrading work pieces.

For example, U.S. Pat. No. 5,168,656 to Jolly et al., and U.S. Pat. No. 5,361,546 to Jonsson disclose two of the typical sanding or grinding or polishing machines each also comprising an endless sand belt for engaging around the rollers or pulleys.

Normally, the sand belt includes a planar base belt member having a number of sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles attached or secured onto the belt member.

However, after the sanding or grinding or abrading operations, the dust or cut chips may be quickly filled among or between the sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles such that the work pieces may not be effectively sanded or ground or abraded by the sand belt.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,419,087 to Haddy discloses another typical sanding device comprising an endless sand belt or abrasive tube sheet for engaging around a spindle.

However, similarly, the sand belt also includes a number of sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles attached or secured onto a planar base belt member for engaging with and for sanding or grinding or abrading work pieces, and the dust or cut chips may also be quickly filled among or between the sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles after the sanding or grinding or abrading operations, such that the work pieces may not be effectively sanded or ground or abraded by the sand belt.

The present invention has arisen to mitigate and/or obviate the afore-described disadvantages of the conventional abrasive belts for sanding or grinding or abrading machines.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The primary objective of the present invention is to provide an abrasive belt including a number of spaces or compartments formed therein for receiving the dust or cut chips and for facilitating the sanding or grinding or abrading operation and for increasing the working life for the abrasive belt.

In accordance with one aspect of the invention, there is provided an abrasive belt comprising a net member including a number of cords secured together for forming a number of eyelets between the cords, and a number of abrading particles applied onto the net member for engaging with a work piece and for abrading the work piece and for abrading cut chips from the work piece and for allowing the cut chips to be received and engaged in the eyelets of the net member and for facilitating the sanding or grinding or abrading operation.

The abrading particles are applied onto an outer portion of the net member. The net member includes an inner portion having a number of abrading particles applied onto the inner portion of the net member.

A base member is further provided and attached or engaged in the net member for supporting the net member. The net member includes a number of longitudinal cords and a number of lateral cords woven together for forming the eyelets between the cords.

Alternatively, the net member includes a number of longitudinal cords and a number of lateral cords that may be secured together as a non-woven structure for forming the eyelets between the cords.

Further objectives and advantages of said present invention will become apparent from a careful reading of said detailed description provided hereinbelow, with appropriate reference to said accompanying drawings.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SAID DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 is a partial perspective view of an abrasive belt in accordance with said present invention for attaching or engaging around the rollers or pulleys of a sanding or grinding or abrading machine and for sanding or grinding or abrading work pieces;

FIG. 2 is a partial cross sectional view of the abrasive belt taken along lines 2-2 of FIG. 1, illustrating the operation of the abrasive belt;

FIG. 3 is an exploded view of the abrasive belt; and

FIG. 4 is an enlarged partial cross sectional view of the abrasive belt.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

Referring to the drawings, and initially to FIGS. 1-3, an abrasive belt 10 in accordance with the present invention comprises a planar base layer or member 11, and a net layer or member 12 attached to or engaged onto the base member 11 for forming an endless belt member and for engaging around the pulleys or rollers 33 of a sanding or grinding or abrading machine 30 and for sanding or grinding or abrading work pieces 80.

As shown in FIGS. 2 and 4, the net member 12 includes a number of longitudinal fibers or fibers or cords 13 and a number of lateral fibers or fibers or cords 14 woven together or secured or welded together as a non-woven structure for forming a number of spaces or compartments or eyelets 15 among or between the cords 13, 14 and for receiving the dust or cut chips 88 (FIG. 2) that will be generated or ground or abraded from the work pieces 80 by the abrasive belt 10.

The abrasive belt 10 further include a number of sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles 16, such as carborundum, attached or secured onto the upper or outer portion of the net member 12, and/or a number of sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles 17, such as carborundum, attached or secured onto the lower or inner portion of the net member 12 and engaged with the base member 11 (FIG. 2). The particles 16, 17 may be attached or secured onto the net member 12 by such as the blowing, sand blasting or applying or ejecting processes.

In operation, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the carborundum or the sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles 16 may be provided for engaging with and for sanding or grinding or abrading the work pieces 80 and for grinding or abrading the dust or cut chips 88 from the work pieces 80 and for allowing the dust or cut chips 88 to be received or engaged in the eyelets 15 of the net member 12 and for preventing the dust or cut chips 88 from interfering or affecting the sanding or grinding or abrading operation of the abrasive belt 10.

It is to be noted that the sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles 16 applied or attached onto the upper or outer portion of the net member 12 may be worn out after use, and the sanding or grinding or abrading sands or particles 17 applied or attached onto the lower or inner portion of the net member 12 may be changeably turned outside for engaging with and for sanding or grinding or abrading the work pieces 80, such that the working life for the abrasive belt 10 may be greatly increased or doubled.

Accordingly, the abrasive belt in accordance with the present invention includes a number of spaces or compartments formed therein for receiving the dust or cut chips and for facilitating the sanding or grinding or abrading operation and for increasing the working life for the abrasive belt.

Although this invention has been described with a certain degree of particularity, it is to be understood that the present disclosure has been made by way of example only and that numerous changes in the detailed construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
