Claims
- 1. An alpha alumina polycrystalline body consisting essentially of alpha alumina crystals having a size no greater than about 0.4 microns, said body having a hardness of at least 16 GPa.
- 2. Abrasive grain comprising polycrystalline abrasive grits, each of said grits consisting essentially of seeded alpha alumina crystals having a size of less than 1 micron and having a hardness of at least 16 GPa.
- 3. Abrasive grain consisting essentially of abrasive grits that are polycrystalline bodies in accordance with claim 2, said grits having a hardness of at least 18 GPa.
- 4. An abrasive tool containing abrasive grits as defined in claim 2 or claim 3.
- 5. A flexible abrasive backing having abrasive grits as defined in claim 2 or claim 3 bonded thereto.
- 6. Aluminous abrasive grain comprising sintered polycrystalline grits consisting essentially of:
- a. sub-micron crystals of alpha alumina; or
- b. a mixture of sub-micron crystals of alpha alumina and spinel; or
- c. (a) or (b) with coarser crystals dispersed therein; said grits having a density of at least 90% of the theoretical density of alpha alumina.
- 7. An alumina-based ceramic body comprising polycrystalline alpha alumina consisting essentially of submicron alpha alumina crystals, said body having a density of at least 95% of theoretical.
- 8. An alumina-based ceramic body of claim 7 wherein said alpha alumina crystals consist essentially of crystals having a size no greater than 0.4 micron.
- 9. An alumina-based ceramic body of claim 7 wherein said body has a hardness of at least 18 GPa.
- 10. An alumina-based ceramic body of claim 7 further including magnesia in the form of a spinel.
- 11. Abrasive grain comprising ceramic bodies as defined in claim 7.
- 12. A shaped body consisting essentially of the alumina-based ceramic body of claim 7.
