Claims
- 1. An improved machine for texturing magnetic recording media of the type having an abrasive tape and a texture roller for biasing the abrasive tape against the magnetic recording media, the improvement comprising:a step on the texture roller, the step having a large diameter relative to a body portion of the texture roller, wherein the abrasive tape rolls against the step and extends beyond the step toward the body portion of the texture roller.
- 2. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the abrasive tape is biased against the magnetic recording media only at the step.
- 3. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 2, wherein a contact start stop zone of the magnetic recording media is textured by the abrasive tape at the step.
- 4. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 3, wherein the contact start stop zone has an average surface roughness of at least 40 Å.
- 5. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein a roller pressure against the magnetic recording media is limited to a width of the step.
- 6. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the abrasive tape extends beyond the step toward the body portion for a smooth and gradual edge on a textured zone of the magnetic recording media.
- 7. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein a specific hardness of the roller, a flexibility of the abrasive tape, a depth of the step, and a pinch distance between the roller and the magnetic recording media define an abrasion pressure profile.
- 8. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the step and abrasive tape are oscillated with respect to the magnetic recording media.
- 9. An improved texturing machine as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an additional step on the texture roller.
- 10. A machine for texturing magnetic recording media, the machine comprising:a magnetic recording media restraint; an abrasive tape; a texture roller for biasing the abrasive tape against the magnetic recording media; and an oscillation mechanism disposed between the recording media restraint and the texture roller, the oscillation mechanism allowing adjustment to oscillations with a tolerance of less than 0.006 inch.
- 11. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, further comprising a tape guide having a slot which engages an edge of the abrasive tape to control the axial position of the tape, and a pressure pad which biases the abrasive tape against the tape guide.
- 12. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 11, wherein the tape guide reduces tape tracking errors by as much as 50 percent.
- 13. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the magnetic recording media restraint comprises edge rollers.
- 14. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the abrasive tape encompasses texturing slurry deposited on a buffing tape.
- 15. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the roller is oscillated relative to the magnetic recording media.
- 16. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the oscillation mechanism comprises an eccentric cam and adjustable upper and lower cam followers.
- 17. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 16, wherein the oscillation mechanism has a tolerance less than 0.0005 inch.
- 18. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the oscillation mechanism provides control over a radial location of a data zone on the magnetic recording media.
- 19. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 18, wherein the data zone radial tolerance is within a 0.003 inch range.
- 20. A texturing machine as claimed in claim 10, wherein the data zone has an average surface roughness of less than 35 Å.
