Claims
- 1. An absorbent article (10) comprising a front area (12), a rear area (14), and a central area (16) disposed between the front area and the rear area, an upper liquid-permeable layer (18) disposed toward a body of a wearer during use of the absorbent article (10), a lower liquid-impermeable layer (20) disposed away from the body of the wearer during use of the absorbent article (10), a liquid distribution layer (22), which comprises discrete passages therethrough which promote movement of liquid toward the liquid-impermeable layer as well as longitudinally, said liquid distribution layer (22) being disposed between the liquid-permeable layer (18) and the liquid-impermeable layer (20), and a liquid storage layer (24) disposed between the liquid-impermeable layer (20) and the liquid distribution layer (22), wherein the liquid distribution layer (22) comprises an undulating strip of material (26) having undulations disposed transversely in the absorbent article (10), which undulations define transport channels in a longitudinal direction and an additional strip of material (28) underlying said undulating strip of material with areas having passages defining openings (30) disposed in the additional strip of material (28), said passages tapering inwardly toward the liquid storage layer and whereby the absorbent article (10) can transfer liquid from the liquid distribution layer (22) toward the liquid storage layer (24).
- 2. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 1 wherein the passages are arranged in the edges of the additional strip of material (28), the edges being folded inward such that the edges are located underneath the undulating strip of material (26).
- 3. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 2 wherein the edges, which run in a longitudinal direction, are folded over such that the passages taper inwardly toward the liquid storage layer (24).
- 4. An absorbent article (10) comprising a front area (12), a rear area (14), and a central area (16) disposed between the front area and the rear area, an upper liquid-permeable layer (18) disposed toward a body of a wearer during use of the absorbent article (10), a lower liquid-impermeable layer (20) disposed away from the body of the wearer during use of the absorbent article (10), a liquid distribution layer (22), which comprises discrete passages therethrough which promote movement of liquid toward the liquid-impermeable layer as well as longitudinally, said liquid distribution layer (22) being disposed between the liquid-permeable layer (18) and the liquid-impermeable layer (20), and a liquid storage layer (24) disposed between the liquid-impermeable layer (20) and the liquid distribution layer (22), wherein the liquid distribution layer (22) comprises areas having passages defining openings (30) for transferring liquid, such passages tapering inwardly toward the liquid storage layer (24), the passages have feet (40) at the tapering ends, said feet being in contact with the liquid storage layer (24) and whereby the absorbent article (10) can transfer liquid from the liquid distribution layer (22) toward the liquid storage layer (24).
- 5. An absorbent article (10) comprising a front area (12), a rear area (14), and a central area (16) disposed between the front area and the rear area, an upper liquid-permeable layer (18) disposed toward a body of a wearer during use of the absorbent article (10), a lower liquid-impermeable layer (20) disposed away from the body of the wearer during use of the absorbent article (10), a liquid distribution layer (22), which comprises discrete passages therethrough which promote movement of liquid toward the liquid-impermeable layer as well as longitudinally, said liquid distribution layer (22) being disposed between the liquid-permeable layer (18) and the liquid-impermeable layer (20), and a liquid storage layer (24) disposed between the liquid-impermeable layer (20) and the liquid distribution layer (22), with an additional strip of material (42) disposed between the liquid distribution layer (22) and the liquid storage layer (24), the additional strip of material having grooves running in the longitudinal direction of the absorbent article and the additional strip of material (42) containing passages tapering inwardly toward the liquid storage layer so that the tapering passages are in contact with the liquid storage layer whereby the absorbent article (10) can transfer liquid from the liquid distribution layer (22) toward the liquid storage layer (24).
- 6. An absorbent article (10) comprising a front area (12), a rear area (14), and a central area (16) arranged between the front area and the rear area, absorbent article (10) further comprising:a) a liquid-permeable layer (18) disposed toward a body of a wearer during use of the absorbent article (10); b) a liquid-impermeable layer (20) disposed away from the body of the wearer during use of the absorbent article; c) a liquid distribution layer (22) disposed between liquid-permeable layer (18) and liquid-impermeable layer (20); d) a liquid storage layer (24) disposed between liquid-impermeable layer (20) and liquid distribution layer (22); and e) a liquid-absorbing layer (32) disposed between liquid-permeable layer (18) and liquid distribution layer (22), wherein the liquid distribution layer (22) comprises areas having passages defining openings (30) for transferring liquid, such passages tapering inwardly toward liquid storage layer (24).
- 7. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6, wherein liquid distribution layer (22) propagates liquid in a longitudinal direction throughout at least part of absorbent article (10).
- 8. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein liquid distribution layer (22) has an undulated configuration defining transport channels, said undulating configuration being disposed transversely in absorbent article (10), said transport channels being disposed longitudinally in absorbent article (10).
- 9. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 8 wherein liquid distribution layer (22) comprises an undulating strip of material (26) and an additional strip of material (28) underlying said undulating strip of material.
- 10. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 9 wherein undulating strip of material (26) comprises a spun textile material.
- 11. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 9 wherein undulating strip of material (26) contains a colorant which prevents visible discernment of the liquid storage layer.
- 12. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 9 wherein additional strip of material (28) comprises an UCTAD (uncreped-through-air-dried) material.
- 13. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6, the liquid storage layer (24) extending from the front area to the rear area of said absorbent article, the liquid storage layer having a higher liquid retention capacity in at least one of front area (12) and rear area (14) of the absorbent article, than in central area (16).
- 14. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein areas of liquid distribution layer (22) and areas of liquid storage layer (24) are in contact with one another via compression, thereby facilitating transfer of liquid.
- 15. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 14 wherein the areas which are in contact with one another via compression are arranged in a point-like manner.
- 16. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 9 wherein the liquid distribution layer comprises areas having passages defining openings (30) disposed in the additional strip of material (28), said passages tapering inwardly toward the liquid storage layer.
- 17. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 16 wherein the passages are arranged in the edges of additional strip of material (28), the edges being located underneath undulating strip of material (26).
- 18. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 17 wherein the edges, which run in a longitudinal direction, are folded over such that the passages taper toward liquid storage layer (24).
- 19. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein the passages have feet (40) at the tapering ends, said feet being in contact with liquid storage layer (24).
- 20. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 9 wherein the liquid distribution layer comprises areas having passages in the additional strip of material, disposed exclusively in one or both of front area (12) and rear area (14) of absorbent article (10).
- 21. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein a centrally located opening passes entirely through the liquid-absorbing layer.
- 22. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6, further comprising a liquid-impermeable barrier layer (38) extending between lateral edge (36) of absorbent article (10) and liquid distribution layer (22).
- 23. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 22 wherein at least one of liquid-impermeable layer (20) and liquid-impermeable barrier layer (38) comprises materials selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, and mixtures comprising polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 24. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein an additional strip of material (42) is disposed between liquid distribution layer (22) and liquid storage layer (24), the additional strip of material having grooves running in the longitudinal direction of the absorbent article.
- 25. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 24 wherein additional strip of material (42) contains passages tapering inwardly toward the liquid storage layer and wherein the tapering passages are in contact with the liquid storage layer.
- 26. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 24 wherein additional strip of material (42) comprises an UCTAD (uncreped-through-air-dried) material.
- 27. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein the absorbent article comprises a woman's sanitary pad or a woman's hygiene inlay.
- 28. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 11 wherein the colorant contained in undulating strip of material (26) comprises a dye.
- 29. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 11 wherein the colorant contained in undulating strip of material (26) comprises a pigment.
- 30. An absorbent article (10) comprising a front area (12), a rear area (14), and a central area (16) arranged between the front area and the rear area, absorbent article (10) further comprising:a) a liquid-permeable layer (18) disposed toward a body of a wearer during use of absorbent article (10); b) a liquid-impermeable layer (20) disposed away from the body of the wearer during use of the absorbent article; c) a liquid distribution layer (22) disposed between liquid-permeable layer (18) and liquid-impermeable layer (20), the liquid distribution layer having tapering passages defining openings to promote movement of liquid toward the liquid-impermeable layer, and having undulations to promote longitudinal movement of liquid; and d) a liquid storage layer (24) disposed between liquid-impermeable layer (20) and liquid distribution layer (22).
- 31. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 29 wherein liquid distribution layer (22) comprises an undulating strip of material (26) and an additional strip of material (28) comprising tapering passages defining openings, said additional strip of material underlying said undulating strip of material.
- 32. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 30 wherein undulating strip of material (26) contains colorant of such visible discernment that visible discernment of the liquid storage layer, after the liquid storage layer has been in contact with liquid, can be prevented, thereby increasing a wearer's subjective feeling of cleanliness.
- 33. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 31 wherein the colorant contained in undulating strip of material (26) comprises a dye.
- 34. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 31 wherein the colorant contained in undulating strip of material (26) comprises a pigment.
- 35. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 31 wherein additional strip of material (28) comprises an UCTAD (uncreped-through-air-dried) material.
- 36. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 30 wherein liquid distribution layer (22) comprises an UCTAD (uncreped-through-air-dried) material.
- 37. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 6 wherein liquid distribution layer (22) comprises an UCTAD (uncreped-through-air-dried) material.
- 38. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 20, liquid storage layer (24) extending from the front area to the rear area of said absorbent article, the liquid storage layer having a higher liquid retention capacity in at least one of front area (12) and rear area (14) of absorbent article (10), than in central area (16).
- 39. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 30 wherein areas of liquid distribution layer (22) and areas of liquid storage layer (24) are in contact with one another via compression, thereby facilitating transfer of liquid.
- 40. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 31 wherein the passages are arranged in the edges of additional strip of material (28), the edges being located underneath undulating strip of material (26).
- 41. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 40 wherein the edges, which run in a longitudinal direction, are folded over such that the passages taper inwardly toward liquid storage layer (24).
- 42. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 30 wherein the passages have feet (40) at the tapering ends, said feet being in contact with liquid storage layer (24).
- 43. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 30 wherein the passages located in the liquid distribution layer are disposed exclusively in one or both of front area (12) and rear area (14) of absorbent article (10).
- 44. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 30 wherein an additional strip of material (42) is disposed between liquid distribution layer (22) and liquid storage layer (24), the additional strip of material having grooves running in the longitudinal direction of the absorbent article.
- 45. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 44 wherein additional strip of material (42) comprises an UCTAD material.
- 46. A process for directed drainage of body liquids released in a localized manner, wherein an absorbent article is in contact with a liquid, the process comprising the liquid entering the absorbent article through a liquid-permeable cover, and being transferred by a liquid distribution aver into a storage area of the absorbent article in which liquid storage is desired, and which transfer of liquid from the liquid distribution layer to the liquid storage area comprises promoting movement of liquid both longitudinally in the absorbent article and away from the liquid-permeable cover wherein said transfer of liquid from the liquid distribution layer to the liquid storage area is facilitated by discrete passages located in said liquid distribution layer, said passages defining openings for transfer of liquid and tapering inwardly toward said liquid storage layer.
- 47. An absorbent article (10) comprising a front area (12), a rear area (14), and a central area (16) arranged between the front area and the rear area, absorbent article (10) further comprising:a) a liquid-permeable layer (18) disposed toward a body of a wearer during use of the absorbent article (10); b) a liquid-impermeable layer (20) disposed away from the body of the wearer during use of the absorbent article; c) a liquid distribution layer (22) disposed between liquid-permeable layer (18) and liquid-impermeable layer (20), said liquid distribution layer having an undulated configuration defining transport channels void of any tangible material that would impede free flow of liquid along the channel, said undulations being disposed transversely in absorbent article (10), which undulations define transport channels in a longitudinal direction of said absorbent article; and d) a liquid storage layer (24) disposed between liquid-impermeable layer (20) and liquid distribution layer (22), wherein the liquid distribution layer (22) comprises areas having passages defining openings (30) for transferring liquid, such passages being disposed exclusively in one or both of front area (12) and rear area (14) of absorbent article (10), said passages tapering inwardly toward the liquid storage layer (24).
- 48. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 47, wherein liquid distribution layer (22) propagates liquid in a longitudinal direction throughout at least part of absorbent article (10).
- 49. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 47 wherein areas of liquid distribution layer (22) and areas of liquid storage layer (24) are in contact with one another via compression, thereby facilitating transfer of liquid toward liquid storage layer (24).
- 50. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 47, liquid storage layer (24) extending from the front area to the rear area of said absorbent article, the liquid storage layer having a higher liquid retention capacity in front area (12) and rear area (14) of the absorbent article, than in central area (16).
- 51. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 47 wherein liquid distribution layer (22) contains a colorant which prevents visible discernment of the liquid storage layer.
- 52. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 51 wherein the colorant contained in undulating strip of material (26) comprises a dye.
- 53. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 52 wherein the colorant contained in undulating strip of material (26) comprises a pigment.
- 54. An absorbent article (10) as in claim 47 wherein the absorbent article comprises a woman's sanitary pad or a woman's hygiene inlay.
