Claims
- 1. An absorbent article having a longitudinal axis comprising:a) a front portion; b) a crotch portion connecting said front portion to a back portion; said crotch portion having a first side edge and a second side edge, each of said first and second side edges of said crotch portion having an end point adjacent said back portion; said end points located where a line drawn parallel to said longitudinal axis, at a maximum distance transversely from said longitudinal axis, passes through said first and second side edges of said crotch portion at least twice; c) said back portion being divided into a first section and a second section; said first section bounded by a first end, a line drawn parallel to said first end, a first side edge, and a second side edge, said first section being extendable in a transverse direction by at least about 25%; said second section bounded by said line drawn parallel to said first end, a second end, a first edge, and a second edge; the majority of said first and second edges being a substantially linear line forming an acute angle with said longitudinal axis; said line drawn parallel to said first end intersecting a pair of corners where said first and second side edges of said first section intersect with said first and second edges of said second section; said second end parallel to said first end and intersecting said end points where said first and second side edges of said crotch portion intersect with said first and second edges of said second section; said first section having a length L2 measured perpendicularly from said first end to said line drawn parallel thereto; said second section having a length L3 measured perpendicularly from said line drawn parallel to said first end to said second end; and said back portion having a ratio L2/L3 ranging from between about 0.1 to about 2; d) first and second fasteners secured to said back portion; and e) an absorbent secured to at least one of said front, back or crotch portions, and each of said first and second fasteners being releasably attached to said front portion to form a pant-like article having a waist opening and a pair of leg openings.
- 2. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said first section is elastic.
- 3. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said first section contains multiple elastic strands that extend from said first side edge to said second side edge.
- 4. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said first section is extendable in at least two directions.
- 5. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said front portion has a first end and said lengths L2 and L3 when added together equal a length L4, and said absorbent article has an overall length L5 measured from said first end of said front portion to said first end of said back portion, and a ratio L4/L5 is established which ranges from between about 0.1 to about 0.5.
- 6. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said first section is capable of extending in the transverse direction by at least about 50%.
- 7. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said first section is capable of extending in the transverse direction by at least about 75%.
- 8. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said second section includes first and second leg elastics.
- 9. An absorbent article having a longitudinal axis comprising:a) a front portion; b) a crotch portion connecting said front portion to a back portion; said crotch portion having a first side edge and a second side edge, each of said first and second side edges of said crotch portion having an end point adjacent said back portion; said end points located where a line drawn parallel to said longitudinal axis, at a maximum distance transversely from said longitudinal axis, passes through said first and second side edges of said crotch portion at least twice; c) said back portion being divided into a first section and a second section; said first section bounded by a first end, a line drawn parallel to said first end, a first side edge, and a second side edge, said first section being extendable in a transverse direction by at least about 25%; said second section bounded by said line drawn parallel to said first end, a second end, a first edge, and a second edge; the majority of said first and second edges being a substantially linear line forming an acute angle with said longitudinal axis; said line drawn parallel to said first end intersecting a pair of corners where said first and second side edges of said first section intersect with said first and second edges of said second section; said second end parallel to said first end and intersecting said end points where said first and second side edges of said crotch portion intersect with said first and second edges of said second section; said first section having a length L2 measured perpendicularly from said first end to said line drawn parallel thereto; said second section having a length L3 measured perpendicularly from said line drawn parallel to said first end to said second end; and said back portion having a ratio L2/L3 ranging from between about 0.2 to about 1.6; d) first and second fasteners secured to said back portion; e) a liquid permeable liner secured to at least one of said front, back or crotch portions; and f) an absorbent positioned below said liner, and each of said first and second fasteners being releasably attached to said front portion to form a pant-like article having a waist opening and a pair of leg openings.
- 10. The absorbent article of claim 9 wherein said first section contains multiple elastic strands that extend from said first side edge to said second side edge.
- 11. The absorbent article of claim 9 wherein said first section is elastic.
- 12. The absorbent article of claim 9 wherein at least one of said first and second fasteners is formed from a hook material that is releasably attached to said front portion which is formed from a loop material.
- 13. The absorbent article of claim 9 wherein at least one of said first and second fasteners is formed from a loop material that is releasably attached to said front portion which is formed from a hook material.
- 14. An absorbent article having a longitudinal axis comprising:a) a front portion; b) a crotch portion connecting said front portion to a back portion; said crotch portion having a first side edge and a second side edge, each of said first and second side edges of said crotch portion having an end point adjacent said back portion; said end points located where a line drawn parallel to said longitudinal axis, at a maximum distance transversely from said longitudinal axis, passes through said first and second side edges of said crotch portion at least twice; c) said back portion being divided into a first section and a second section; said first section bounded by a first end, a line drawn parallel to said first end, a first side edge, and a second side edge, said first section being extendable in a transverse direction by at least about 25%; said second section bounded by said line drawn parallel to said first end, a second end, a first edge, and a second edge; the majority of said first and second edges being a substantially linear line forming an acute angle with said longitudinal axis; said line drawn parallel to said first end intersecting a pair of corners where said first and second side edges of said first section intersect with said first and second edges of said second section; said second end parallel to said first end and intersecting said end points where said first and second side edges of said crotch portion intersect with said first and second edges of said second section; said first section having a length L2 measured perpendicularly from said first end to said line drawn parallel thereto; said second section having a length L3 measured perpendicularly from said line drawn parallel to said first end to said second end; and said back portion having a ratio L2/L3 ranging from between about 0.3 to about 1.5; d) first and second fasteners secured to said back portion; e) a liquid permeable liner secured to at least one of said front, back or crotch portions; and f) an absorbent positioned below said liner, and each of said first and second fasteners being releasably attached to said front portion to form a pant-like article having a waist opening and a pair of leg openings, wherein said lengths L2 and L3 when added together equal a length L4 and said absorbent article has an overall length L5 measured from a first end of said front portion to said first end of said back portion, and a ratio L4/L5 is established which ranges from between about 0.2 to about 0.5.
- 15. The absorbent article of claim 14 wherein first section is capable of extending in the transverse direction at least about 50%.
- 16. The absorbent article of claim 14 wherein said ratio L4/L5 ranges from between about 0.3 to about 0.4.
- 17. The absorbent article of claim 14 wherein at least one of said first and second fasteners is formed from a hook material that is releasably attached to said front portion which is formed from a loop material.
- 18. The absorbent article of claim 14 wherein at least one of said first and second fasteners is formed from a loop material that is releasably attached to said front portion which is formed from a hook material.
- 19. The absorbent article of claim 14 wherein said first section contains multiple elastic strands that extend from a first side edge to a second side edge.
- 20. The absorbent article of either claim 1, 9, or 14 wherein said acute angle is between about 25 degrees and about 89 degrees.
- 21. The absorbent article of either claim 1, 9, or 14 wherein said acute angle is between about 55 degrees and about 87 degrees.
- 22. The absorbent article of either claim 1, 9, or 14 wherein said acute angle is between about 61 degrees and about 76 degrees.
- 23. The absorbent article of either claim 1, 9, or 14 wherein said first and second side edges are substantially linear for a length of at least about 70 percent of the length of said second section.
