- 5. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein said flap material is folded inward toward said backsheet.
- 6. The absorbent article of claim 5 wherein said flap pleat restraint secures said flap material to said backsheet.
- 7. The absorbent article of claim 5 wherein said flap pleat restraint secures said flap material to a portion of said flap.
- 8. An absorbent article having a body-facing side, a garment side that defines a plane, a principal longitudinal centerline, and a principal transverse centerline, said absorbent article comprising:
- a main body portion having two spaced apart longitudinal edges and two spaced apart transverse edges, said main body portion comprising a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet joined to said topsheet, and an absorbent core positioned between said topsheet and said backsheet;
- a pair of flaps, said flaps having a proximal edge, a distal edge, and a flap transverse centerline, each flap being associated with its proximal edge with said main body portion at a juncture and extending laterally outward from one of the longitudinal edges of said main body portion to its distal edge, said junctures each having a pair of ends, and said absorbent article having two corner regions for each flap, said corner regions being located in the regions of the ends of each juncture, wherein portions of said flaps lie along said flap transverse centerline and portions of said flaps lie in said corner regions, and when said flaps are extended, the portions of said flaps that lie along said flap transverse centerline lie further outward in the transverse direction from the principal longitudinal centerline than the portions of said flaps located in said corner regions, and at least one of said flaps being folded along at least two generally longitudinally-oriented fold lines to form at least one pleat along said juncture, said fold lines comprising at least
- a first fold line that is nearest the proximal edge of the flap when the pleat in said flap is unfolded;
- a second fold line spaced farther away from said proximal edge when the pleat in said flap is unfolded, wherein when said pleat is intact said flap is folded back away from said principal longitudinal centerline and the distal edge of the portion of said flap that is located along said flap transverse centerline lies transversely outward from the longitudinal edge of said main body portion;
- at least a part of the flap that is folded to form the second fold line is positioned between at least part of the flap that is folded to form the first fold line and the plane defined by the garment side of the absorbent article; and
- a flap pleat restraint located along said flap transverse centerline for restraining said pleat from unfolding in the area of said flap transverse centerline while allowing said pleat to unfold at those locations disposed longitudinally away from said flap transverse centerline.
- 9. A sanitary napkin for wearing in and securing to a wearer's pair of panties, said sanitary napkin having a body-facing side, a garment side, a principal longitudinal centerline, and a principal transverse centerline, said sanitary napkin comprising:
- a main body portion having two spaced apart longitudinal edges and two spaced apart transverse edges, said main body portion comprising a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet joined to said topsheet, and an absorbent core positioned between said topsheet and said backsheet;
- a pair of flaps, said flaps having a proximal edge, a distal edge, and a flap transverse centerline, each flap being associated with said main body portion at a juncture and extending laterally outward from a longitudinal edge of said main body portion, said junctures each having a pair of ends, and said sanitary napkin having two corner regions for each flap, said corner regions being located in the regions of the ends of each juncture, wherein portions of said flap lie along said flap transverse centerline and portions of said flaps lie in said corner regions, and when said flaps are extended, the portions of said flaps that lie along said flap transverse centerline lie further outward in the transverse direction from the principal longitudinal centerline than the portions of said flaps located in said corner regions, and both of said flaps being folded along at least two generally longitudinally-oriented fold lines to form at least one pleat along said juncture, said fold lines comprising at least
- a first fold line that is nearest the proximal edge of the flap when the pleat in said flaps are unfolded, said first fold line being formed by a part of said flaps that are folded inward toward one side of the sanitary napkin; and

- a fastener disposed along said flap transverse centerline near the distal end of said flaps for fastening the distal end of said flap under said panties; and
- a flap pleat restraint located along said flap transverse centerline for restraining said pleats from unfolding in the area of said flap transverse centerline while allowing said pleats to unfold at those locations disposed longitudinally away from said flap transverse centerline so that said portions of said flaps disposed longitudinally away from said flap transverse centerline can extend outwardly in a generally transverse direction to relieve the stresses that develop in said flaps when said flaps are folded around the crotch region of said panties and said sanitary napkin is secured to said panties.
- 10. The sanitary napkin of claim 9 wherein each of said flaps is secured to said panties.
- 11. The sanitary napkin of claim 9 wherein one of said flaps is secured to the other flap adjacent the distal edges of said flaps.
