Claims
- 1. An absorbent article having a first waist region, a second waist region opposed to the first waist region, a crotch region disposed between the first waist region and the second waist region, a longitudinal centerline, a lateral centerline, a pair of longitudinal edges and a pair of end edges, the absorbent article comprising:a topsheet; a backsheet joined with the topsheet; an absorbent core disposed between at least a portion of the topsheet and the backsheet; and a storage element for storing viscous bodily waste having a viscosity between about 10 cP and about 2×105 cP away from a wearer during a wearing cycle, the storage element having a body facing surface and a garment facing surface and including a macro-particulate structure comprising a multiplicity of nonabsorbent particles having a nominal size of between about 1.0 mm and about 25.4 mm and a continuous interstitial void space that is defined by the space between said particles.
- 2. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the storage element is disposed in the crotch region.
- 3. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the storage element is disposed in the second waist region.
- 4. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the storage element is disposed adjacent the absorbent core.
- 5. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the storage element is disposed intermediate the topsheet and the backsheet.
- 6. The absorbent article of claim 1 further including at least one waste pocket, the storage element disposed adjacent at least a portion of the waste pocket.
- 7. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the storage element further includes a lotion.
- 8. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the storage element further includes an odor absorbent.
- 9. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the storage element further includes an antimicrobial agent.
- 10. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the storage element further includes an enzyme inhibitor.
- 11. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the storage element further includes a pH buffer.
- 12. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the particles are disposed in patterned, three-dimensional regions of the macro-particulate structure.
- 13. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes microporous particles.
- 14. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes macroporous particles.
- 15. The absorbent article of claim 14 wherein the particles comprise materials chosen from the group consisting of: plastic, ceramics, or glass.
- 16. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes a mixture of macroporous and microporous particles.
- 17. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes nonporous particles.
- 18. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes a mixture of absorbent and nonabsorbent particles.
- 19. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes a first layer of particles and a second layer of particles.
- 20. The absorbent article of claim 19 wherein the first layer includes particles which are different from the particles in the second layer.
- 21. The absorbent article of claim 19 wherein at least one of the first layer of particles or the second layer of particles includes a mixture of different particles.
- 22. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the particles comprise materials chosen from the group consisting of: closed cell foams, encapsulated gas, plastics or ceramics.
- 23. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the particles are unjoined to each other.
- 24. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein at least some of the particles are joined to each other.
- 25. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure further includes a support element about which the particles are located.
- 26. The absorbent article of claim 25 wherein the support element includes one of the following: an adhesive web, a nonadhesive web, a scrim, or a screen.
- 27. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes particles having at least two different shapes.
- 28. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the macro-particulate structure includes particles having more than one size.
- 29. The absorbent article of claim 1 wherein the particles have a nominal size of between about 2 mm and about 14 mm.
