Claims
- 1. An animal bedding composition for distribution upon an animal stall to provide a hygienic support medium comprising a mixture of
(a) shredded cardboard composed of individual cardboard pieces having internal corrugations and outer panels forming air gaps therebetween, said cardboard pieces having a width of about ¼ inch to 1 inch and a height of about {fraction (1/16)} inch to ½ inch; and (b) about ½ to 8 ounces of clinoptilolite per 3 cubic feet of cardboard for reducing the amount of airborne ammonia from animal waste, the clinoptilolite being disposed on the outer panels and internal corrugations of the corrugated cardboard pieces.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein about 1 to 3 ounces of clinoptilolite is mixed with 3 cubic feet of cardboard.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the height of each of the pieces is approximately {fraction (3/16)} inch.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the pieces have a length of about ½ inch to about 24 inches.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the pieces have a width of about ⅜ inch and a length of about ½ to 18 inches.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the pieces have a width of about ⅜ inch and a length of about 4 inches.
- 7. A method for maintaining a stall for an animal, the stall having a floor, the method comprising the step of distributing upon the floor a bedding composition comprising a mixture of (i) shredded cardboard composed of individual cardboard pieces having internal corrugations and outer panels forming air gaps therebetween, and (ii) a particulate ion exchange agent for reducing the amount of airborne ammonia from animal waste to thereby provide a hygienic cushioned bedding which exhibits reduced urine odor and is relatively free from dust particles after use by the large animal.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the ion exchange agent is interspersed with the corrugated cardboard pieces whereby the ion exchange agent is disposed on the outer panels and internal corrugations of the corrugated cardboard pieces.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein about ½ to 8 ounces of ion exchange agent is mixed with 3 cubic feet of cardboard.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein the cardboard pieces have a width of approximately ¼ to 1 inch.
- 11. The method of claim 7 wherein the ion exchange agent is a zeolite.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the zeolite is clinoptilolite.
- 13. The method of claim 7 wherein the corrugated cardboard is constructed of kraft paper.
- 14. The method of claim 7 wherein the bedding composition is distributed over the floor at an average approximate thickness in a range of 1 to 10 inches.
- 15. A method for maintaining a stall for an animal, the stall having a floor, the method comprising the step of distributing upon the floor a bedding composition comprising a mixture of shredded cardboard composed of individual cardboard pieces having internal corrugations and outer panels forming air gaps therebetween, said cardboard pieces having a width of about ¼ inch to 1 inch and a height of about {fraction (1/16)} inch to ½ inch.
- 16. The method of claim 15, the bedding composition further comprising about ½ to 8 ounces of an ion exchange agent per 3 cubic feet of cardboard for reducing the amount of airborne ammonia from animal waste, the ion exchange agent being disposed on the outer panels and internal corrugations of the corrugated cardboard pieces.
- 17. The method of claim 15 wherein the ion exchange agent is a zeolite.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the zeolite is clinoptilolite.
- 19. The method of claim 15 wherein the corrugated cardboard is constructed of kraft paper.
