Claims
- 1. An absorbent garment comprising:
an extensible backsheet having opposite side portions; a liquid permeable topsheet having opposite side portions; and a retention portion having opposite side edges, an inner surface defining an area, said retention portion disposed between said topsheet and said backsheet with said inner surface facing said topsheet and with said opposite side portions of said backsheet and said topsheet extending beyond said side edges of said retention portion; wherein at least a portion of said opposite side portions of said topsheet are attached to at least a portion of said opposite side portions of said backsheet on opposite sides of said retention portion, and wherein said inner surface of said retention portion is attached to said topsheet intermediate said opposite side edges of said retention portion, wherein less than 30% of the area of said outer surface of said retention portion is attached to said topsheet.
- 2. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said retention portion is not attached to said backsheet.
- 3. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said retention portion comprises an outer surface facing said backsheet and defining an area, wherein said outer surface of said retention portion is attached to said backsheet, and wherein less than 30% of said area of said outer surface of said retention portion is attached to said backsheet.
- 4. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said retention portion is attached to said topsheet along an entire length of said retention portion.
- 5. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said retention portion comprises a liquid impermeable barrier.
- 7. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said extensible backsheet provides an elongation of at least about 1 cm when subjected to a tensile force of 11.8 g/cm.
- 8. The absorbent garment of claim 7 wherein said extensible backsheet provides a sustained deformation of at least about 20% when subjected to a tensile force of 19.70 g/cm and then allowed to relax, after removal of said tensile force, for a period of 1 minute.
- 10. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said topsheet is extensible and wherein said extensible topsheet provides an elongation of at least about 1 cm when subjected to a tensile force of 11.8 g/cm.
- 11. The absorbent garment of claim 10 wherein said extensible topsheet provides a sustained deformation of at least about 20% when subjected to a tensile force of 19.70 g/cm and then allowed to relax, after removal of said tensile force, for a period of 1 minute.
- 12. The absorbent garment of claim 1 wherein said retention portion comprises at least one fold formed along at least one of said opposite side edges thereof.
- 13. The absorbent garment of claim 12 wherein said at least one fold is a z-shaped fold.
- 14. The absorbent garment of claim 12 wherein said at least one fold is attached to said topsheet.
- 15. A method for absorbing bodily exudates with an absorbent garment, the method comprising:
providing said absorbent garment comprising an extensible backsheet having opposite side portions; a liquid permeable topsheet having opposite side portions; and a retention portion having opposite side edges and an inner surface defining an area, said retention portion disposed between said topsheet and said backsheet with said inner surface facing said topsheet and with said opposite side portions of said backsheet and said topsheet extending beyond said side edges of said retention portion; wherein at least a portion of said opposite side portions of said topsheet are attached to at least a portion of said opposite side portions of said backsheet on opposite sides of said retention portion, and wherein less than 30% of the area of said inner surface of said retention portion is attached to said topsheet, wherein said inner surface of said retention portion is attached to said topsheet intermediate said opposite side edges of said retention portion; securing said absorbent garment on said user; and insulting a crotch region of said absorbent garment with said bodily exudates and extending said backsheet as said retention portion absorbs said bodily exudates.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said retention portion comprises an outer surface facing said backsheet and defining an area, wherein said outer surface of said retention portion is attached to said backsheet, and wherein less than 30% of the area of said outer surface surface of said retention portion is attached to said backsheet.
- 17. The method of claim 15 wherein less than 10% of the area of said inner surface of said retention portion is attached to said topsheet.
- 18. The method of claim 15 wherein said extensible backsheet provides an elongation of about 1 cm when subjected to a tensile force of 11.8 g/cm, and wherein said extensible backsheet provides a sustained deformation of at least about 20% when subjected to a tensile force of 19.70 g/cm and then allowed to relax, after removal of said tensile force, for a period of 1 minute.
- 19. The method of claim 15 wherein said retention portion comprises at least one fold formed along at least one of said opposite side edges thereof.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein at least a portion of said at least one fold is attached to said topsheet.
