Claims
- 1. A process for the manufacture of adsorbent clay mineral particles suitable for use as a litter, comprising selecting particles of the clay mineral smaller than 2 mm in size and containing a quantity of moisture not exceeding 15% by weight but at least an effective quantity to allow the formation of compacted masses therefrom, compacting the so selected clay mineral particles, consisting essentially of the clay mineral and moisture, in a press selected from the group consisting of roller presses and static presses to form compacted masses thereof and breaking the compacted masses into particles larger in size than the selected clay mineral particles and in the 710 micron to 4 mm size range, said clay mineral being selected from the group consisting of smectites and hormites.
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the clay mineral is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal montmorillonites, alkaline earth metal montmorillonites and sepiolite.
- 3. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the press is a roller press operated at a pressure of 5 KN to 500 KN per cm of roll length.
- 4. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the press is a static press operated at a pressure of 0.5 KN to 200 KN per sq. cm.
- 5. A process for the manufacture of adsorbent clay mineral particles suitable for use as a litter, comprising selecting particles of the clay mineral smaller than 2 mm in size from the group consisting of alkali metal montmorillonites, alkaline earth metal montmorillonites and sepiolite, controlling the quantity of moisture in the particles so that it does not exceed 15% by weight of the particles but is present therein in at least an effective quantity to allow the formation of compacted masses therefrom, compacting the so selected and controlled clay mineral particles, consisting essentially of the clay mineral and moisture, in a press selected from roller presses operated at a pressure of from 5 KN to 500 KN per cm of roll length and static presses operated at a pressure of from 0.5 KN to 200 KN per sq. cm, to form compacted masses thereof and breaking the compacted masses into particles larger in size than the selected clay mineral particles and in the 710 micron to 4 mm size range.
