Claims
- 1. A method for providing thermal protection for a drive system, the method comprising:
- obtaining component temperatures of a plurality of drive system components;
- normalizing each component temperature to provide a respective normalized component temperature;
- obtaining a normalized drive system temperature by determining a maximum value of the normalized component temperatures;
- comparing the normalized drive system temperature with at least one predetermined maximum normalized temperature and using a result of the comparison to determine whether a corrective action is needed.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein normalizing each component temperature comprises determining whether the component temperature is above or below a respective component warning temperature and, if the component temperature is below the respective component warning temperature, multiplying a normalized warning temperature by the ratio of the component temperature minus an ambient temperature over the component warning temperature minus the ambient temperature.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein normalizing each component temperature further includes, if the component temperature is above the respective warning temperature, multiplying the difference between a normalized shutdown temperature and the normalized warning temperature by the ratio of the component temperature minus the component warning temperature over the a component shutdown temperature minus the component warning temperature and adding the normalized warning temperature.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein comparing the normalized drive system temperature includes comparing the normalized drive system temperature with at least one predetermined maximum normalized temperature and using a result of the comparison to determine whether a corrective action is needed includes comparing the normalized drive system temperature with two predetermined maximum normalized temperatures comprising a normalized drive system warning temperature and a normalized drive system shutdown temperature.
- 5. The method of claim 4 further including displaying the result of the comparison on a monitor.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the result is displayed as the normalized drive system temperature.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the result is displayed as a warning light.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further including, in response to an indication that a corrective action is needed, inhibiting a drive system propulsion effort.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further including comparing the normallized drive system temperature to an additional predetermined normallized temperature and, if the normallized drive system temperature reaches the additional predetermined normallized temperature, reducing a retard effort of the drive system to a level at which the drive system is continuously rated.
- 10. A thermal protection system for a drive system, the thermal protection system comprising:
- temperature estimators for obtaining component temperatures of a plurality of drive system components; and
- a computer for
- normalizing each component temperature to provide a respective normalized component temperature;
- obtaining a normalized drive system temperature by determining a maximum value of the normalized component temperatures; and
- comparing the normalized drive system temperature with at least one predetermined maximum normalized temperature and using a result of the comparison to determine whether a corrective action is needed.
- 11. The thermal protection system of claim 10 further including a monitor for displaying the result of the comparison.
- 12. The thermal protection system of claim 11 wherein the monitor is adapted to display the result as the normalized drive system temperature.
- 13. The thermal protection system of claim 11 wherein the monitor is adapted to display the result as a warning light.
