Claims
- 1. In an acetabular cup of the type including an outer shell of a hard material having a cavity circumscribed by an annular base surface, and a bearing insert of a material which is softer than said material of said outer shell, said bearing insert being disposed within said cavity of said shell, the improvement therewith comprising:
- coupling means disposed on said annular base surface for coupling a tool to said outer shell, said tool being used for installing said cup in a patient's acetabulum, said coupling means operating to prevent said tool from damaging said bearing insert during the installation of said cup, wherein said coupling means includes a track with an inclined surface, a track rim surface, and locking means, said inclined surface having a first end and a second end, said first end of said inclined surface merging with said annular base surface and said second end of said inclined surface merging with said track rim surface of said track, said locking means including a locking depression disposed in said track for receiving an associated locking means on said tool.
- 2. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein said shell is fabricated from a metal.
- 3. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein said insert is fabricated from a plastic.
- 4. The acetabular cup according to claim 1, wherein said tool is adapted to control the rotational, pivotal and axial alignments of cup.
- 5. A method for implanting an acetabular cup into a patients's acetabulum, said cup being formed from a hard material and a bearing insert formed from a material which is softer than said hard material, said cup having tool coupling means disposed on an annular base surface thereof, said tool coupling means including a inclined surface, said method comprising the steps of:
- preparing said acetabulum to receive said cup;
- attaching an installation tool comprising adapter means having leg means, to said tool coupling means on said annular base surface by turning said adaptor means relative to said cup so that said leg means on said adaptor means transverses under said inclined surface of said tool coupling means and locks in place;
- aligning said cup within said acetabulum using said installation tool;
- driving said cup into said acetabulum using said installation tool; and
- detaching said installation tool from said tool coupling means by actuating a tool releasing means located on said installation tool.
- 6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said installation tool further comprises handle means, and wherein said step of attaching said installation tool to said tool coupling means comprises:
- coupling said handle means to said adaptor means after coupling said adaptor means to said tool coupling means of said peripheral surface.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein said tool releasing means is located on said handle means.
- 8. The method according to claim 6, wherein said step of coupling said handle means to said adaptor means comprises the step of selectively choosing an adaptor means which is sized to match the size of the acetabular cup to be implanted.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, wherein said adaptor means is selectively chosen by matching indicia located on said adaptor means to indicia on said acetabular cup to be implanted.
