Claims
- 1. A graft copolymer consisting essentially of about 25-95% by weight of a polyester backbone consisting essentially of a polyol and an organic dicarboxylic acid and about 5-75% by weight of side chains; wherein the polyester backbone contains pendant hydroxyl groups before the attachment of side chains by replacement of a hydrogen of at least one of the hydroxyl groups by the formula ##STR5## where R is an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or an aromatic group R.sup.1 is an alkylene group having 2-6 carbon atoms, R.sup.2, which forms a side chain, is an acrylate polymer.
- 2. The graft copolymer of claim 1 having a weight average molecular weight of about 5,000 to 1,000,000 determined by gel permeation chromatography.
- 3. The graft copolymer of claim 2 in which the acrylate side chain is selected from the group consisting of polymerized alkyl methacrylate, alkyl acrylate, hydroxy alkyl acrylate, hydroxy alkyl methacrylate, an ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The graft copolymer of claim 3 in which the backbone is a polyester of neopentyl glycol, trimethylol propane and azelaic acid, and R.sup.2, is polymerized methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, hydroxy ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid and in which R cyclohexylene and R.sup.1 is --CH.sub.2 --.sub.2.
