Claims
- 1. A coating composition comprising 5-60% by weight of a film forming constituent of a graft copolymer and 50-95% by weight of a liquid, wherein the graft copolymer consisting essentially of about 25-95% by weight of a cellulose ester or nitro cellulose polymer backbone and about 5-75% by weight of acrylic side chains; wherein the backbone contains pendent hydroxyl groups before the attachment of side chains by replacement of a hydrogen of at least one of the hydroxyl groups by the formula ##STR5## where R is an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or an aromatic group; R.sup.1 is an alkylene group having 2-6 carbon atoms, R.sup.2, which forms a side chain, is an acrylic polymer.
- 2. The coating composition of claim 1 in which the graft copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of about 5,000 to 1,000,000 determined by gel permeation chromatography.
- 3. The coating composition of claim 2, wherein the film forming constituents consist essentially of
- (a) 50-95% by weight of the graft copolymer and
- (b) 5-50% by weight of a crosslinking agent.
- 4. The coating composition of claim 3 in which the crosslinking agent is an alkylated melamine formaldehyde resin.
- 5. The coating composition of claim 3 in which the crosslinking agent is an organic polyisocyanate.
- 6. The coating composition of claim 2 in which the backbone of the graft copolymer consists essentially of cellulose acetate butyrate.
- 7. The coating composition of claim 6 in which the side chain R.sup.2 is a polyacrylate.
- 8. The coating composition of claim 7 in which the side chain is selected from the group consisting of alkyl methacrylate, alkyl acrylate, hydroxy alkyl acrylate hydroxy alkyl methacrylate or mixtures thereof.
- 9. The coating composition of claim 8 in which the backbone is cellulose acetate butyrate and the side chain R.sup.2 is polymerized methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate and R.sup.1 is --CH.sub.2 --.sub.2.
