Claims
- 1. An activated alumina catalyst containing sodium oxide, for promoting the reaction of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide so that such compounds may be removed from gases, the catalyst having increased resistance to sulfate poisoning and increased catalytic activity, characterized by the catalyst having a specific surface area greater than 100 m.sup.2 /g (BET) and a sodium oxide content in an amount of 1.0 to 2.5 wt % (1100.degree. C. calcined basis), the remainder being activated alumina.
- 2. The catalyst of claim 1, wherein the LOI (400.degree. to 1100.degree. C.) is less than 6.0 wt %.
- 3. The catalyst of claim 2, wherein the LOI is less than 5.0 wt %.
- 4. The catalyst of claim 2, wherein the LOI is between 2.0 and 4.0 wt %.
- 5. The catalyst of claim 2, wherein the surface area is greater than 300 m.sup.2 /g (BET).
