Claims
- 1. A hydrocarbon synthesis process which comprises reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen under hydrocarbon synthesis reaction conditions including elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a reduced cobalt catalyst which catalyst has been activated by reducing cobalt oxide with hydrogen at elevated temperatures of 275.degree.-425.degree. C. and pressures while maintaining, during the reduction step, a water partial pressure of 0.1-5 atmospheres.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the total pressure during reduction is 1.3-10 atmospheres.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the water partial pressure is maintained at 0.1-2.0 atmospheres during the reduction.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the cobalt is supported and the surface area of the support is less than 100 m.sup.2 /gm.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein the support is a Group IVB metal oxide.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the support is titania.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the catalyst contains a promoter.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein the promoter is rhenium.
