Claims
- 1. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between said pair of substrates; a group of electrodes for applying to said liquid crystal layer an electric field substantially parallel to the substrate plane and a plural number of active elements being formed on one of said pair of substrates; and a pair of alignment layers, a respective alignment layer being disposed between said liquid crystal layer and a respective one of said pair of substrates, wherein each of said pair of alignment layers is a photo-reactive material layer, and said photo-reactive material layer is a photo-reactive alignment layer which has been subjected to linearly polarized light irradiation to selectively derive a photochemical reaction; wherein a tilt angle of liquid crystal molecules on the alignment layer surface of the substrate is 3° or less; and wherein said photo-reactive material layer is made of an organic polymer prepared by dehydration ring-closure of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid comprising a single-ring rigid diamine as amine moiety and an aliphatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride or an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride as acid moiety, and wherein the weight-average molecular weight of one of said polymer and oligomer is 2,000-90,000.
- 2. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein a respective one of said alignment layers is disposed on opposite sides of said liquid crystal layer and is made of an organic polymer selected from the group consisting of at least one of (a) a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid imide, (b) a polymer and an oligomer-imide, (c) a polymer and an oligomer-imidosiloxane, and (d) a polymer and an oligomer-amide-imide.
- 3. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 2, wherein said organic polymer has at least one of long-chain alkylene groups and fluoro groups.
- 4. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between said pair of substrates; a group of electrodes for applying to said liquid crystal layer an electric field substantially parallel to the substrate plane and a plural number of active elements being formed on one of said pair of substrates; and a pair of alignment layers, a respective alignment layer being disposed between said liquid crystal layer and a respective one of said pair of substrates, wherein each of said pair of alignment layers is a photo-reactive material layer, and said photo-reactive material layer is a photo-reactive alignment layer which has been subjected to linearly polarized light irradiation to selectively derive a photochemical reaction; wherein an extrapolation length, which expresses a strength of torsional anchoring of liquid crystal molecules and said alignment layer surface at one or both of interfaces between said alignment layer and said liquid crystal layer is at least 10% of a gap between said pair of substrates; and wherein said photo-reactive material layer is made of an organic polymer prepared by dehydration ring-closure of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid comprising a single-ring rigid diamine as amine moiety and an aliphatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride or an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride as acid moiety.
- 5. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 4, wherein said alignment layer is made of an organic polymer selected from the group consisting of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid imide, at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-imide, at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-imidosiloxane, and at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amide-imide.
- 6. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 5, wherein said organic polymer has at least one of long-chain alkylene groups and fluoro groups.
- 7. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between said pair of substrates; a group of electrodes for applying to said liquid crystal layer an electric field substantially parallel to the substrate plane and a plural number of active elements being formed on one of said pair of substrates; and a pair of alignment layers, a respective alignment layer being disposed between said liquid crystal layer and a respective one of said pair of substrates, wherein each of said pair of alignment layers is a photo-reactive material layer, and said photo-reactive material layer is a photo-reactive alignment layer which has been subjected to linearly polarized light irradiation to selectively derive a photochemical reaction; wherein a torsional anchoring coefficient A2 of an alignment layer surface for liquid crystal molecules at an interface of said liquid crystal layer and said alignment layer is not greater than 20 μN/m; and wherein said photo-reactive material layer is made of an organic polymer prepared by dehydration ring-closure of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid comprising a single-ring rigid diamine as amine moiety and an aliphatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride or an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride as acid moiety.
- 8. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 7, wherein said alignment layer is made of an organic polymer selected from the group consisting of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid imide, at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-imide, at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-imidosiloxane, and at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amide-imide.
- 9. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device according to claim 8, wherein said organic polymer has at least one of long-chain alkylene groups and fluoro groups.
- 10. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between said pair of substrates; a group of electrodes for applying to said liquid crystal layer an electric field substantially parallel to the substrate plane and a plural number of active elements being formed on one of said pair of substrates; and a pair of alignment layers, a respective alignment layer being disposed between said liquid crystal layer and a respective one of said pair of substrates, wherein each of said pair of alignment layers is a photo-reactive material layer, and said photo-reactive material layer is a photo-reactive alignment layer which has been subjected to linearly polarized light irradiation to selectively derive a photochemical reaction; wherein said alignment layer is made of an organic polymer having at least one of long-chain alkylene groups and fluoro groups and selected from the group consisting of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid imide, at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-imide, at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-imidosiloxane, and at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amide-imide; and wherein said photo-reactive material layer is made of an organic polymer prepared by dehydration ring-closure of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid comprising a single-ring rigid diamine as amine moiety and an aliphatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride or an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride as acid moiety.
- 11. An active-matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between said pair of substrates; a group of electrodes for applying to said liquid crystal layer an electric field substantially parallel to the substrate plane and a plural number of active elements being formed on one of said pair of substrates; and a pair of alignment layers, a respective alignment layer being disposed between said liquid crystal layer and a respective one of said pair of substrates, wherein each of said pair of alignment layers is a photo-reactive material layer, and said photo-reactive material layer is a photo-reactive alignment layer which has been subjected to linear polarized light irradiation to selectively derive a photochemical reaction; and wherein the active-matrix liquid crystal display device includes at least one of (a) a tilt angle of liquid crystal molecules on the alignment layer surface of the substrate is 3° or less, (b) an extrapolation length, which expresses a strength of torsional anchoring of liquid crystal molecules and said alignment layer surface at one or both of interfaces between said alignment layer and said liquid crystal layer is at least 10% of a gap between said pair of substrates, and (c) a torsional anchoring coefficient A2 of an alignment layer surface for liquid crystal molecules at an inner face of said liquid crystal layer and said alignment layer is not greater than 20 μN/m; and wherein said photo-reactive material layer is made of an organic polymer prepared by dehydration ring-closure of at least one of a polymer and an oligomer-amic acid comprising a single-ring rigid diamine as amine moiety and an aliphatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride or an alicyclic tetracarboxylic dianhydride as acid moiety, and wherein the weight-average molecular weight of one of said polymer and oligomer is 2,000-90,000.
