Claims
- 1. An ESD protective trigger circuit connected between a power rail and a ground, a trigger circuit output node drives an ESD protective device that limits the ESD voltage, and where the ESD voltage appears between the power and the ground rails, the trigger circuit comprising:
an active device with a control node, a first node coupled to the Vcc rail, and the trigger circuit output node, circuit means for controlling the voltage across the active device, between the control node and Vcc, and for controlling a first current, whereby, when the ESD voltage goes positive, the active device turns on and delivers the first current to the trigger circuit output node, and, when the ESD voltage starts to fall, the first current is terminated.
- 2. The ESD protective trigger circuit as defined in claim 1 wherein the circuit means for controlling the voltage and first current comprises:
a voltage dropping device configured between the control node and Vcc, and a capacitor connected between the control node and ground, wherein the control node voltage trails Vcc by an amount that turns on the active device when the ESD voltage is increasing and that turn off the active device when the ESD voltage is falling, wherein the first current drives the ESD protective device into a snap-back condition and turns on a parasitic bipolar transistor that parallels the ESD protective device.
- 3. The ESD protective trigger circuit as defined in claim 1 wherein the circuit means for controlling comprises a diode connected solid state device with its anode coupled to Vcc and its cathode coupled to the control node.
- 4. The ESD protective trigger circuit as defined in claim 1 wherein the circuit means for controlling comprises:
a diode connected PMOS transistor.
- 5. The ESD protective trigger circuit as defined in claim 1 wherein the active device comprises a PMOS transistor.
- 6. An electronic computer controlled system selected from the group consisting of communication, networking, routing, display, storage, or server/client systems having computer processing electronics, keyboard and display or other such user interfaces, memory, and input/output controllers and devices, further comprising comprising:
a power supply providing power to Vcc and ground rails, and where the ESD voltage appears between the power and the ground rails, electronic circuits powered from the Vcc and ground rails, a first active ESD protective device that limits the ESD voltage, and the active ESD device defining a first control node, and a second active device with a second control node, a first node coupled to the Vcc rail, and the trigger circuit output node coupled to the first control node, circuit means for controlling the voltage across the active device, between the control node and Vcc, and a first current, whereby, when the ESD voltage goes positive, the second active device turns on and delivers the first current to the trigger circuit output node, and, when the ESD voltage starts to fall, the first current is terminated.
- 7. The electronic computer controlled system of claim 6 wherein the circuit means for controlling comprises:
a diode connected solid state device with its anode coupled to Vcc and its cathode coupled to the second control node, and a capacitor connected between the second control node and ground, wherein the second control node voltage trails Vcc by an amount that turns on the first active device when the ESD voltage is increasing and that turns off the first active device when the ESD voltage is falling.
- 8. The electronic computer controlled system of claim 7 wherein the ESD protective trigger circuit as defined in claim 1 wherein the diode connected solid state device and the second active device are both PMOS transistors.
