Claims
- 1. A printer comprising:
- a frame;
- a feed-in roller for feeding sheets of paper one by one;
- a carriage for printing the sheet fed by said feed-in roller;
- a feed-in gear for rotating said feed-in roller;
- a movable gear supported rotatably on a pivotally mounted arm and capable of assuming a first position at which said movable gear engages said feed-in gear to rotate said feed-in gear and a second position at which said movable gear does not engage said feed-in gear; and
- a spring member having one end supported by said arm and another end supported by said frame, said carriage including an actuating portion provided on said carriage to pivot said arm toward said first position at which said movable gear engages said feed-in gear by pressing and displacing an intermediate portion of said spring member.
- 2. The printer as claimed in claim 1, wherein said spring member is formed of a rod-like coil spring.
- 3. An actuating mechanism in a printer comprising:
- a frame;
- an arm pivotally mounted on said frame;
- a spring member having one end supported by said arm and another end supported by said frame;
- a carriage slidably mounted on said printer: and
- an actuating member mounted on said carriage for displacement between a least two positions, a first of the at least two positions at which said actuating member is out of engagement with an intermediate portion of said spring member and a second of the at least two positions at which said actuating member engages and displaces said intermediate portion of said spring member to thereby pivot said arm.
- 4. The actuating mechanism as claimed in claim 3, wherein said spring member is formed of a rod-like coil spring.
- 5. An ink jet printer having a print area where the printing of recording paper is effected by a head mounted on a carriage reciprocating in a direction of a row, a first nonprint area located on a first side of the print area and a second nonprint area located on the other side of the print area, said print area being intermediate said first and second nonprint areas when viewed in said carriage reciprocating direction, the printing by the head not being effected when said head is in said first and second nonprint area, said ink jet printer comprising:
- a paper feeding mechanism for feeding a recording paper in a direction perpendicular to the carriage reciprocating direction;
- a suction mechanism for sucking ink from said head;
- a drive gear displaceable to at least a paper-feed driving position for driving said paper feed mechanism and a suction driving position for driving said suction mechanism;
- a changeover assembly, engageable with said drive gear, for displacing said drive gear from at least said paper-feed driving position to said suction driving position; and
- a selecting protrusion located in said first nonprint area, said changeover assembly selectively contacting said selecting protrusion when said carriage is in said first nonprint area:
- said changeover assembly being further selectively engageable with said drive gear when said carriage is in said second nonprint area;
- said selecting protrusion selectively contacting said changeover assembly said first nonprint area so as to permit displacement of said drive gear from said paper-feed driving position to said suction driving position so that said drive gear is in said position driving said suction mechanism when said carriage is in said second nonprint area.
- 6. The ink jet printer as claimed in claim 5, wherein said changeover assembly comprises:
- an actuating member engageable with said drive gear for causing said drive gear to be selectively displaced from at least said paper-feed driving position to said suction driving position; and
- a changeover lever rotatably mounted on said carriage and rotatable between at least a first position where said changeover lever does not contact said actuating member when said carriage is in said second nonprint area and a second position where said changeover lever does contact said actuating member when said carriage is in said second nonprint area;
- said selecting protrusion positioned in said first nonprint area and contacting said changeover lever causing said changeover lever to rotate from said first position to said second position so that when said carriage is in said second nonprint area said changeover lever can contact said actuating member.
- 7. The ink jet printer as claimed in claim 6, wherein said carriage reciprocates between a first direction from said first nonprint area to said second nonprint area and a second direction from said second nonprint area to said first nonprint area, said changeover lever further includes a resetting projection mounted thereon and wherein said printer further includes a resetting protrusion engageable with said resetting projection when said changeover lever is in said second position; said resetting projection adapted to contact said resetting protrusion when said changeover lever is in said second position and said carriage is moving in said second direction so as to cause said changeover lever to rotate to said first position from said second position.
- 8. A method of driving a feed-in roller for feeding sheets of paper in a printer, comprising the steps of:
- providing a frame, a feed-in roller rotatably mounted in the printer for feeding sheets of paper in the printer; a feed-in gear rotatably mounted in the printer for rotating the feed-in roller, a pivotally mounted arm pivotable between at least a first position and a second position and a movable gear rotatably mounted on the arm, the movable gear adapted to engage the feed-in gear when the arm is pivoted to the second position from the first position and further adapted not to engage the feed-in gear when the arm is in the first position, a spring member having one end connected to the arm and the other end connected to the frame and an intermediate portion disposed between the two ends of the spring member, and a carriage slidably mounted in the primer and having an actuating portion connected thereto, the carriage constructed to slide in a carriage moving direction;
- sliding the carriage in said carriage moving direction;
- causing the actuating portion to displace said intermediate portion of said spring member by the pressing contact of the actuating portion thereagainst;
- pivoting said arm from the first position to the second position by the displacement of the intermediate portion of the spring member by the actuating portion pressing thereagainst;
- engaging the movable gear with the feed-in gear so as to cause the feed-in roller to rotate whereby a sheet of paper is fed in said printer.
