Claims
- 1. An actuation mechanism for a cover system on an open-topped container, the cover system including a cover extendable from a stowed position to a deployed position covering the container and a bail member attached to the cover and movable relative to the container to move the cover between the stowed and deployed positions, said mechanism comprising:at least one coil spring having an anchor portion and at least one reaction end; a shaft including a portion configured for engaging said anchor portion of said at least one spring; a mounting plate connected to said shaft and configured to be mounted on the container, said mounting plate including a plurality of mounting holes to allow for variation of angular orientation of said portion of said shaft relative to the container; and at least one reaction post attachable to the bail member, said at least one reaction post being configured to contact said at least one reaction end of said at least one coil spring, whereby said at least one coil spring applies a torsional force to the bail member.
- 2. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 wherein said portion of said shaft includes an elongated slot.
- 3. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 wherein said shaft is disposed between at least two of said mounting holes.
- 4. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 wherein said plurality of mounting holes comprises two sets of mounting holes.
- 5. The actuation mechanism of claim 4 wherein said sets of mounting holes are on opposite sides of said shaft.
- 6. The actuation mechanism of claim 4 wherein said mounting holes in at least one of said sets of mounting holes are substantially evenly spaced.
- 7. The actuation mechanism of claim 4 wherein at least one of said sets of mounting holes includes three of said mounting holes.
- 8. The actuation mechanism of claim 4 wherein said mounting holes are substantially equidistant from said shaft.
- 9. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 wherein said shaft projects substantially perpendicularly from said mounting plate.
- 10. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 wherein said at least one reaction post comprises two reaction posts.
- 11. The actuation mechanism of claim 1 wherein said at least one coil spring comprises at least one double coil spring.
- 12. An actuation mechanism for a cover system on an open-topped container, the cover system including a cover extendable from a stowed position to a deployed position covering the container and a bail member attached to the cover and movable relative to the container to move the cover between the stowed and deployed positions, said mechanism comprising:at least one spring having an anchor portion and at least one reaction end; a mounting plate including means for engaging said anchor portion and further including means for mounting said plate to the container at variable angular orientations relative to the bail member when the bail member is in the stowed position; and means attachable to the bail member for engaging said at least one reaction end, whereby said at least one spring applies a force to move the bail member between the stowed and deployed positions.
- 13. An actuation mechanism for a cover system on an open-topped container, the cover system including a cover extendable from a stowed position to a deployed position covering the container and a bail member attached to the cover and movable relative to the container to move the cover between the stowed and deployed positions, said mechanism comprising:at least one spring having an anchor portion and at least one reaction end; a shaft including a portion configured for engaging said anchor portion of said at least one spring; a mounting plate connected to said shaft, said mounting plate including a plurality of mounting holes for mounting said plate to the container at variable angular orientations relative to the bail member when the bail member is in the stowed position; and at least one reaction post attachable to the bail member for engaging said at least one reaction end, whereby said at least one spring applies a force to move the bail member such that the cover moves between the stowed and deployed positions.
- 14. The actuation mechanism of claim 13 wherein said portion of said shaft comprises an elongated slot.
- 15. The actuation mechanism of claim 13 wherein said shaft is disposed between at least two of said mounting holes.
- 16. The actuation mechanism of claim 13 wherein said shaft projects substantially perpendicularly from said mounting plate.
- 17. An actuation mechanism for a cover system on an open-topped container, the cover system including a cover extendable from a stowed position to a deployed position covering the container and a bail member attached to the cover and movable relative to the container to move the cover between the stowed and deployed positions, said mechanism comprising:at least one coil spring having an anchor portion and at least one reaction end; at least one reaction post attachable to the bail member and configured to engage said at least one reaction end of said at least one coil spring; and means for supporting said anchor portion of said at least one coil spring on the container, whereby said means for supporting is operable to adjust an initial torque exerted by said at least one spring on the bail member.
- 18. An actuation mechanism for a cover system on an open-topped container, the cover system including a cover extendable from a stowed position to a deployed position covering the container, said mechanism comprising:a bail member configured to be attached to the cover and configured to be movable relative to the container to move the cover between the stowed and deployed positions; at least one coil spring having an anchor portion and at least one reaction end; a shaft including a portion configured for engaging said anchor portion of said at least one spring; a mounting plate connected to said shaft and configured to be mounted on the container, said mounting plate including a plurality of mounting holes to allow for variation of angular orientation of said portion of said shaft relative to said container; and at least one reaction post attachable to the bail member, said at least one reaction post being configured to contact said at least one reaction end of said at least one coil spring, whereby said at least one coil spring applies a torsional force to the bail member.
- 19. The actuation mechanism of claim 18 wherein said portion of said shaft includes an elongated slot.
- 20. The actuation mechanism of claim 18 wherein said shaft is disposed between at least two of said mounting holes.
- 21. The actuation mechanism of claim 18 wherein said plurality of mounting holes comprises two sets of mounting holes.
- 22. The actuation mechanism of claim 21 wherein said sets of mounting holes are on opposite sides of said shaft.
- 23. The actuation mechanism of claim 21 wherein said mounting holes in at least one of said sets of mounting holes are substantially evenly spaced.
- 24. The actuation mechanism of claim 21 wherein at least one of said sets of mounting holes includes three of said mounting holes.
- 25. The actuation mechanism of claim 18 wherein said mounting holes are substantially equidistant from said shaft.
