Claims
- 1. An actuator for a disc drive, comprising:
a movable actuator body; a bumper stop adjacent the actuator body and extending outwardly from the actuator body for engaging a fixed reference surface of the disc drive; and an overmold member connecting the bumper stop to the actuator body.
- 2. The actuator of claim 1, in which the bumper stop comprises a polymeric material.
- 3. The actuator of claim 2, in which the overmold member comprises a polymeric material different from the material of the bumper stop.
- 4. The actuator of claim 1, further comprising:
an electrical coil supported by the overmold member.
- 5. The actuator of claim 1, in which the bumper stop further comprises:
an attaching portion connected to the overmold member; and an extended portion projecting from the attaching portion.
- 6. The actuator of claim 5, in which the extended portion further comprises:
a contacting portion for engaging the reference surface, configured such that a gap exists between the contacting portion and the attaching portion.
- 7. The actuator of claim 6, in which the extended portion further comprises:
a connecting portion connecting the contacting portion and the attaching portion and spanning the gap therebetween, the compressive yield strength of the contacting portion being greater than the compressive yield strength of the connecting portion, such that the contacting portion is configured to deflect toward the attaching portion in response to engagement with the reference surface.
- 8. The actuator of claim 6, in which a cross sectional thickness of the contacting portion is substantially greater than a cross sectional thickness of the connecting portion.
- 9. A disc drive, comprising:
a movable actuator body; a stationary reference surface; a bumper stop adjacent the actuator body and extending outwardly from the actuator body for engaging the reference surface; and an overmold member connecting the bumper stop to the actuator body.
- 10. The disc drive of claim 9, further comprising:
an electrical coil supported by the overmold member for interacting with a magnetic field to selectively move the actuator body.
- 11. The disc drive of claim 9 in which the bumper stop moves with the actuator body and defines a path of travel, further comprising:
a magnet assembly for generating a magnetic field for selectively moving the actuator body, the magnet assembly further comprising:
a magnetic pole member, the reference surface being mounted to the pole member and being disposed in the bumper stop path of travel.
- 12. The disc drive of claim 9, further comprising:
a rotatable disc; a head supported by the actuator body and moveable adjacent a data storage surface of the disc, the bumper stop being configured to prevent further movement of the actuator body in a direction when the head is moved to a predetermined boundary on the data storage surface.
- 13. The disc drive of claim 9, further comprising:
a stop pin, the reference surface being located on the stop pin.
- 14. A disc drive, comprising:
a base; a data disc rotatably mounted to the base; an actuator mounted to the base for travel over the disc; and means for limiting travel of the actuator.
- 15. The disc drive of claim 14, the limiting means further comprising:
a bumper stop movable with the actuator for contacting a fixed reference surface.
- 16. The disc drive of claim 14, the limiting means further comprising:
a reference surface fixed with respect to the base for contacting the actuator.
- 17. The disc drive of claim 14 including a magnet assembly for selectively moving the actuator, in which the limiting means further comprises:
a reference surface fixed to the magnet assembly for contacting the actuator.
- 18. The disc drive of claim 14, the limiting means further comprising:
a polymeric bumper stop for dissipating kinetic energy of the actuator at a limit of actuator travel.
