Claims
- 1. An actuator for use in a safety system for a power tool, where the power tool includes a moving cutting element having at least one cutting edge, and where the safety system includes a brake member configured to move into contact with the cutting edge of the cutting element to stop movement of the cutting element, the actuator comprising:
a source of stored force adapted to move the brake member into the cutting edge of the cutting element, and a releasing mechanism configured to provide a movement to release the stored force.
- 2. The actuator of claim 1, where the source of stored force is a spring.
- 3. The actuator of claim 2, where the source of stored force is a torsion spring.
- 4. The actuator of claim 1, where the releasing mechanism includes a solenoid.
- 5. The actuator of claim 1, where the releasing mechanism includes a voice coil.
- 6. The actuator of claim 1, where the releasing mechanism includes a shape memory alloy.
- 7. The actuator of claim 1, where the releasing mechanism includes an integrated force array.
- 8. The actuator of claim 1, further comprising at least one pivot arm configured to restrain the force until released by the releasing mechanism.
- 9. The actuator of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of pivot arms configured to restrain the force until released by the releasing mechanism.
- 10. The actuator of claim 1, where the releasing mechanism is within a housing.
- 11. An actuator for use in a safety system for a power tool, where the power tool includes a moving cutting element, and where the safety system is configured to stop movement of the cutting element, the actuator comprising:
a source of stored force adapted to cause the safety system to stop movement of the cutting element, a releasing mechanism configured to provide a movement to release the stored force, and a pivot arm engaged with the releasing mechanism and configured to restrain the stored force, where the releasing mechanism is configured to release the stored force by disengaging with the pivot arm.
- 12. The actuator of claim 11, where the source of stored force is a spring.
- 13. The actuator of claim 12, where the source of stored force is a torsion spring.
- 14. The actuator of claim 11, where the releasing mechanism includes a solenoid.
- 15. The actuator of claim 11, where the releasing mechanism includes a voice coil.
- 16. The actuator of claim 11, where the releasing mechanism includes a shape memory alloy.
- 17. The actuator of claim 11, where the releasing mechanism includes an integrated force array.
- 18. The actuator of claim 11, further comprising at least one pivot arm configured to restrain the force until released by the releasing mechanism.
- 19. The actuator of claim 11, further comprising a plurality of pivot arms configured to restrain the force until released by the releasing mechanism.
- 20. An actuator for use in a safety system for a power tool, where the power tool includes a moving cutting element, and where the safety system is configured to stop movement of the cutting element, the actuator comprising:
force applying means for causing the safety system to perform a predetermined action, and releasing means for releasing the stored force.
