Claims
- 1. An alkylation process comprising the step of contacting a paraffinic compound, capable of forming a carbonium ion under strong acid conditions, with an olefin in the presence of a strong acid system comprised of an acid component and a mixture of:
- (a) one or more adamantane derivative containing at least one unsubstituted bridgehead position and which is capable of being protonated, or hydrogen bonded to, or dissociated by an acid; and
- (b) one or more surfactants capable of stabilizing the one or more adamantane derivatives of (a) above at a hydrocarbon-acid interface.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the adamantane derivatives are represented by the formula
- Ad--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --X
- where n=0 to 10, and X is a polar group capable of making the adamantane derivative soluble in a strong acid system.
- 3. The process claim 2 wherein X is selected from the group consisting of --PH.sub.2, --NO.sub.2, --SH, ##STR3## --C.dbd.N, --COOH, --SO.sub.3 H and --NH--COCH.sub.3.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the catalyst composition can be represented by the formula:
- Ad--(CH.sub.2).sub.n XR.sup.1 R.sup.2
- where n=1-10, X is N or P, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently selected from H and C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 linear alkyl groups, in which said linear alkyl groups can independently be substituted with inert or unreactive substituents under the process conditions, with the proviso that said substitution does not result in a tertiary carbon-hydrogen bond, and where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are said alkyl as above in the formula.
