Claims
- 1. A method for delivery of anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) therapy by a cardiac rhythm management device, comprising:(a) monitoring cardiac electrical activity in order to detect an arrhythmia; (b) upon detection of a terminable arrhythmia, selecting a pacing protocol for delivering ATP therapy from a list of possible protocols in accordance with a success/failure probability parameter associated with each protocol in the list; (c) delivering ATP therapy in accordance with the selected protocol; (d) updating the success/failure ratio parameter associated with the selected protocol in accordance with the success or failure of the protocol in terminating the arrhythmia; and, (e) repeating step (b) if the protocol was unsuccessful in terminating the arrhythmia.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein a protocol for delivering ATP therapy is selected from the list by selecting the protocol having the highest success/failure probability parameter associated with it.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising classifying a detected arrhythmia as to type and wherein a success/failure probability parameter specific for each type of arrhythmia is associated with each protocol in the list.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein a protocol for delivering ATP therapy is selected from the list in accordance with the success/failure probability parameter specific for the type of arrhythmia detected.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein only the success/failure probability parameter specific for the type of arrhythmia detected is updated in accordance with the success or failure of the protocol in terminating the arrhythmia.
- 6. The method of claim 3 wherein the arrhythmia type is based upon waveform morphology.
- 7. The method of claim 3 wherein the arrhythmia type is based upon rate.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising delivering a defibrillation shock if a specified number of ATP therapy attempts are unsuccessful in terminating the arrhythmia.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein each success/failure ratio parameter associated with each protocol in the list is initialized to 1:1.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein each success/failure ratio parameter associated with each protocol in the list is initialized to an expected probability that the protocol will terminate an arrhythmia.
- 11. A cardiac rhythm management device, comprising:a sensing and pacing channel for sensing cardiac electrical activity and delivering pacing pulses; a shock pulse generator for delivering a defibrillation shock; a control unit for detecting a terminable arrhythmia and delivering ATP therapy; and, wherein the control unit is programmed to: (a) upon detection of a terminable arrhythmia, select a pacing protocol for delivering ATP therapy from a list of possible protocols in accordance with a success/failure probability parameter associated with each protocol in the list; (b) deliver ATP therapy in accordance with the selected protocol; (c) update the success/failure ratio parameter associated with the selected protocol in accordance with the success or failure of the protocol in terminating the arrhythmia; and, (d) repeat step (a) if the protocol was unsuccessful in terminating the arrhythmia.
- 12. The device of claim 11 wherein the control unit is programmed to select a protocol for delivering ATP therapy from the list as the protocol having the highest success/failure probability parameter associated with it.
- 13. The device of claim 11 wherein the control unit is programmed to classify a detected arrhythmia as to type and wherein a success/failure probability parameter specific for each type of arrhythmia is associated with each protocol in the list.
- 14. The device of claim 13 wherein the control unit is programmed to select a protocol for delivering ATP therapy from the list in accordance with the success/failure probability parameter specific for the type of arrhythmia detected.
- 15. The device of claim 14 wherein the control unit is programmed to update only the success/failure probability parameter specific for the type of arrhythmia detected in accordance with the success or failure of the protocol in terminating the arrhythmia.
- 16. The device of claim 13 wherein the arrhythmia type is based upon waveform morphology.
- 17. The device of claim 13 wherein the arrhythmia type is based upon rate.
- 18. The device of claim 11 wherein the control unit is programmed to deliver a defibrillation shock if a specified number of ATP therapy attempts are unsuccessful in terminating the arrhythmia.
- 19. The device of claim 11 wherein each success/failure ratio parameter associated with each protocol in the list is initialized to 1:1.
- 20. The device of claim 11 wherein each success/failure ratio parameter associated with each protocol in the list is initialized to an expected probability that the protocol will terminate an arrhythmia.
