Claims
- 1. The Diels-Alder addition product of (1) a conjugated diacetylene compound of the formula: ##STR52## wherein: Ar' is a tetravalent aromatic radical, the four carbonyl groups being attached directly to separate carbon atoms and each pair of carbonyl groups being attached to adjacent carbon atoms in Ar' except in the case of Ar' being a naphthalene radical, one or both pairs of the carbonyl groups may be attached to peri-carbon atoms;
- Ar is a divalent aromatic radical;
- n is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20;
- R is hydrogen or an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms;
- and (2) a dienophile containing one to four acceptor moieties having the formula RCH.dbd.C(R.degree.)-- wherein R is as defined above and R.degree. is defined as for R.
- 2. The product of claim 1, in which the dienophile has at least two of said acceptor moieties.
- 3. The product of claim 2, in which the dienophile is monomeric.
- 4. The product of claim 2, in which the dienophile is oligomeric.
- 5. The product of claim 2, in which the dienophile is polymeric.
- 6. The product of claim 2, in which the dienophile is a divinyl aromatic compound.
- 7. The product of claim 6, in which the divinyl aromatic compound is a divinyl benzene.
- 8. The product of claim 2, in which the monomer is a diisopropenyl aromatic compound.
- 9. The product of claim 8, in which the compound is a diisopropenyl benzene.
- 10. The product of claim 1, in which the dienophile is a maleyl compound selected from the class consisting of maleic anhydride, maleic esters, maleic amines and maleic imides.
- 11. The product of claim 10, in which the maleyl compound has the formula ##STR53##
- 12. The product of claim 10 in which the maleyl compound is a diester having the formula: ##STR54## wherein R.sup.IV is an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms.
- 13. The product of claim 10, in which the maleyl compound has the formula: ##STR55## wherein R.sup.IV is an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms.
- 14. The product of claim 12, in which the diester has the formula: ##STR56##
- 15. The product of claim 13, in which the maleyl compound has the formula: ##STR57##
- 16. The product of claim 2, in which the dienophile is an end-capped polyimide selected from the class of oligomers and polymers derived from the reaction n moles of Ar(NH.sub.2), (n+1) moles of Ar' ##STR58## and two moles of a monoaryl amine having mono--HC.dbd.CH-- unsaturation.
- 17. The product of claim 1 in which n has a value of zero.
- 18. The product of claim 1 in which n has a value of one to 10.
- 19. The product of claim 6 in which n has a value of one to 10.
- 20. The product of claim 11 in which n has a value of one to 10.
