Claims
- 1. The Diels-Alder addition product of a composition of matter comprising a polyimide of the formula: ##STR53## and a dienophile of the formula: ##STR54## wherein: Ar' is a tetravalent aromatic radical, the four carbonyl groups being attached directly to separate carbon atoms and each pair of carbonyl groups being attached to the adjacent carbon atoms in Ar' except in the case of Ar' being a naphthalene radical, one or both pairs of the carbonyl groups may be attached to peri-carbon atoms;
- Ar is a divalent aromatic radical;
- R is hydrogen or an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms;
- n is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20;
- R.degree. has the same definition as given for R;
- n' has the same definition as given for n; and
- Ar'" is a trivalent aromatic radical containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms, to which the attached pair of carbonyl groups is attached to adjacent or peri carbon atoms in said Ar'" radical.
- 2. The product of claim 1, in which R is H.
- 3. The product of claim 1, in which R.degree. is H.
- 4. The product of claim 1, in which R is C.sub.6 H.sub.5.
- 5. The product of claim 1, in which --Ar'" is ##STR55##
- 6. The product of claim 1, in which n and n' are zero.
- 7. The product of claim 1, in which n is zero and n' is at least one.
- 8. The product of claim 1, in which n' is zero and n is at least one.
- 9. The product of claim 1, in which Ar' is selected from the class consisting of: ##STR56##
- 10. The product of claim 9, in which Ar' is: ##STR57##
- 11. The product of claim 1, in which the Ar attached to --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C-- is selected from the class consisting of --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 -- and --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 12. The product of claim 1, in which the polyimide is prepared by the reaction of a dianhydride of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and a diamine selected from the class consisting of:
- 1,3- and 1,4-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 benzene
- 2,3-; 2,4-; 2,6- and 3,5-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 toluene
- 3,3'-; 4,4'- and 3,4'-methylene dianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-oxydianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-sulfonyldianiline;
- 1,3-; 1,4- and 1,4-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene;
- 1,3- and 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy) benzene; and
- H.sub.2 NC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 NH.sub.2 in which the respective attachments to a C.sub.6 H.sub.4 ring are meta or para to each other.
- 13. The product of claim 12, in which the diamine of said polyimide is methylene dianiline.
- 14. The product of claim 12, in which the diamine of said polyimide is oxydianiline.
- 15. The product of claim 12, in which the diamine of said polyimide is sulfonyl dianiline.
- 16. The product of claim 12, in which the diamine of said polyimide is 2,4-toluene dianiline.
- 17. The product of claim 1, in which the polyimide is prepared by the reaction of a dianhydride of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and a diamine selected from the class consisting of:
- 1,3- and 1,4-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 benzene;
- 2,3-; 2,4-; 2,6- and 3,5-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 toluene
- 3,3'-; 4,4'- and 3,4'-methylene dianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-oxydianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-sulfonyldianiline;
- 1,3-; 1,4- and 1,2-bis(3-aminophenoxy) benzene;
- 1,3- and 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy) benzene; and
- H.sub.2 NC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 NH.sub.2 in which the substitutions on the C.sub.6 H.sub.4 rings are meta or para.
- 18. The product of claim 17, in which the diamine of said polyimide is methylene dianiline.
- 19. The product of claim 17, in which the diamine of said polyimide is oxydianiline.
- 20. The product of claim 17, in which the diamine of said polyimide is 2,4-toluene diamine.
- 21. The product of claim 3, in which the said dienophile
- --Ar'" is ##STR58## Ar is ##STR59## and >NArN< is derived from H.sub.2 NC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 NH.sub.2.
- 22. The process of preparing the product of claim 1, which comprises heating together the said polyimide and the said dienophile.
