Claims
- 1. The Diels-Alder addition product of a polyimide of the formula: ##STR52## wherein: Ar' is a tetravalent aromatic radical, the four carbonyl groups being attached directly to separate carbon atoms and each pair of carbonyl groups being attached to adjacent carbon atoms in Ar' except in the case of Ar' being a naphthalene radical, one or both pairs of the carbonyl groups may be attached to peri-carbon atoms;
- Ar is a divalent aromatic radical;
- n is zero or an integer having a value of one to 20; and
- R is hydrogen or an organic moiety containing 1 to 21 carbon atoms;
- and a dienophile of the formula:
- Ar.degree.--C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C--Ar.degree.
- wherein Ar.degree. is a monovalent aromatic radical.
- 2. The product of claim 1, in which Ar.degree. is selected from the class consisting of:
- C.sub.6 H.sub.5 --, C.sub.6 H.sub.5 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 -- and C.sub.6 H.sub.5 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 3. The product of claim 2, in which Ar.degree. is C.sub.6 H.sub.5.
- 4. The product of claim 1, in which R is H.
- 5. The product of claim 1, in which R is C.sub.6 H.sub.5.
- 6. The product of claim 1, in which n is zero.
- 7. The product of claim 1, in which n is one.
- 8. The product of claim 1, in which n is at least two.
- 9. The product of claim 1, in which Ar' is selected from the class of: ##STR53##
- 10. The product of claim 1, in which Ar' is: ##STR54##
- 11. The product of claim 1, in which the --Ar--attached to C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C is selected from the class consisting of --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, and --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 12. The product of claim 1, in which the --Ar-- attached to --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C-- is --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 13. The product of claim 1, in which the polyimide is prepared by the reaction of a dianhydride of an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid and a diamine selected from the class consisting of:
- 1,3- and 1,4-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 benzene
- 2,3-; 2,4-; 2,6- and 3,5-(NH.sub.2).sub.2 toluene;
- 3,3'-; 4,4'- and 3,4'-methylene dianiline;
- 4,4'-; 3,3'- and 3,4'-oxydianiline;
- 4,4'; 3,3'- and 3,4'-sulfonyldianiline;
- 1,3-; 1,4- and 1,2-bis(3-aminophenoxy) benzene;
- 1,3- and 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy) benzene; and
- H.sub.2 NC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 NH.sub.2 in which the substitution on the C.sub.6 H.sub.4 rings are meta or para.
- 14. The product of claim 13, in which the diamine is a methylene dianiline.
- 15. The product of claim 13, in which the diamine is an oxydianiline.
- 16. The product of claim 13, in which the diamine is a sulfonyl dianiline.
- 17. The product of claim 13, in which the diamine is 2,4-toluene-diamine.
- 18. The product of claim 13, in which the diamine is: H.sub.2 NC.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 NH.sub.2.
- 19. The product of claim 13, in which R is H.
- 20. The product of claim 13, in which R is C.sub.6 H.sub.5.
- 21. The process of preparing the product of claim 1, which comprises heating an intimate mixture of said polyimide and said dienophile.
- 22. The process of claim 21, in which the temperature of heating is in the range of 225.degree. C. to 375.degree. C.
- 23. The process of claim 21, in which the concentration of said polyimide is higher than the concentration of said dienophile.
