Claims
- 1. A method for preparing a polyolefin with at least one printed surface, the method comprising:
- preparing a polyolefinic composition by blending from about 99.5% to about 90.0% by weight of a low surface energy polyolefin with from about 0.5% to about 10.0% by weight of an amphiphile having the formula:
- RA(CHR.sup.2 [CH.sub.2 ].sub.n A.sup.1).sub.m R.sup.1
- where R and R.sup.1 are selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, acyl, and arylacyl derivatives of an aliphatic or aliphatic/aromatic mono-acid with a molecular weight of from about 150 to about 500 daltons, A and A.sup.1 are selected from the group consisting of O and S, R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of H, CH.sub.3 and C.sub.2 H.sub.5, n is from 0 to 3 and m is from 2 to 20 whereby the amphiphile is intimately mixed with and is substantially nonleachable from the polyolefin into aqueous liquids and wherein the surface energy of the polyolefinic composition, as measured by water contact angle, is less than about 85.degree.; and
- applying printing ink to at least one surface of the resulting polyolefinic composition.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein R and R.sup.1 are identical, R.sup.2 is hydrogen, and A and A.sup.1 are oxygen.
- 3. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the blending comprises:
- preparing a melt of the polyolefin;
- preparing a melt of the amphiphile; and
- mixing the two melts together.
- 4. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the blending comprises:
- adding the polyolefin to a high shear mixer:
- adding the amphiphile to the same high shear mixer; and
- recovering a high surface energy polyolefin.
- 5. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the blending comprises:
- adding the polyolefin to an extruder;
- adding the amphiphile to the same extruder; and
- extruding a high surface energy polyolefin.
- 6. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the blending comprises adding the amphiphile as a solid to the polyolefin as a melt.
- 7. The method of claim 1 or 2 wherein the polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, .alpha.-olefin modified polypropylene and poly(4-methylpentene-1).
