Claims
- 1. A method for selecting an adhesive composition having improved performance, the method comprising observing a surface using an atomic force microscope, characterized in that the surface is a non-destructively de-bonded surface of the adhesive composition, and that the method further comprises
(a) subdividing the de-bonded surface into domains as defined herein of pull-off force or stiffness; and (b) selecting an adhesive composition having
(i) an average stiffness domain area ≦ about 2500 nm2; or (ii) an average pull-off force domain area ≦ about 2500 nm2; or (iii) a pull-off force overall average domain distribution less than about 25%; or (iv) a stiffness overall average domain distribution less than about 25%; or (v) combinations of any two or more thereof.
- 2. The method of claim 1 comprising selecting an adhesive composition having at least two of parameters (i)-(iv).
- 3. The method of claim 2 comprising selecting an adhesive composition having at least three of parameters (i)-(iv).
- 4. The method of claim 3 comprising selecting an adhesive composition having all of parameters (i)-(iv).
- 5. A method for selecting an adhesive composition, the method comprising:
(a) observing a non-destructively de-bonded surface of the adhesive composition; (b) subdividing the de-bonded surface into domains of at least one of pull-off force and stiffness; and (c) selecting an adhesive composition having at least one of the following parameters:
(i) an average stiffness domain area ≦ about 2500 nm2; (ii) an average pull-off force domain area ≦ about 2500 nm2; (iii) an pull-off force overall average domain distribution less than about 25%; and (iv) a stiffness overall average domain distribution less than about 25%.
- 6. The method of claim 5 comprising selecting an adhesive composition having at least two of parameters (i)-(iv).
- 7. The method of claim 6 comprising selecting an adhesive composition having at least three of parameters (i)-(iv).
- 8. The method of claim 7 comprising selecting an adhesive composition having all of parameters (i)-(iv).
- 9. An adhesive composition, which if adhered to and non-destructively de-bonded from a surface, has:
(i) an average stiffness domain area ≦ about 2500 nm2; or (ii) an average pull-off force domain area ≦ about 2500 nm2; or (iii) an pull-off force overall average domain distribution less than about 25%; or (iv) a stiffness overall average domain distribution less than about 25%; or (v) combinations of any two or more thereof.
- 10. The adhesive composition according to claim 9 comprising a polyolefin with an Mw> about 20,000 and a tackifier with an Mw≦ about 10,000.
- 11. The adhesive composition according to claim 10 wherein the tackifier is grafted with an unsaturated acid or anhydride or derivative thereof.
- 12. The adhesive composition according to claim 11 wherein the unsaturated acid or anhydride or derivative thereof is maleic anhydride.
- 13. The adhesive composition according to claim 12 wherein the hydrocarbon resin is grafted with less than 5 wt % maleic anhydride.
- 14. The adhesive composition according to claim 13 wherein the hydrocarbon resin is grafted with from 2-3 wt % maleic anhydride.
- 15. The adhesive composition according to claim 10 further comprising a wax.
- 16. The adhesive composition according to claim 11 further comprising a wax.
- 17. The adhesive composition according to claim 10 wherein the tackifier is derived from a thermally polymerized tackifier.
- 18. The adhesive composition according to claim 17 wherein the hydrocarbon resin is grafted with less than about 5 wt % maleic anhydride.
- 19. The adhesive composition according to claim 18 wherein the hydrocarbon resin is grafted with from about 2-3 wt % maleic anhydride.
- 20. The adhesive composition according to claim 10 wherein the tackifier is derived from a non-thermally polymerized tackifier.
- 21. The adhesive composition according to claims 20 wherein the tackifier is derived from a tackifier selected from the group of catalytically polymerized tackifiers, natural resin tackifiers and rosin tackifiers.
- 22. The adhesive composition according to claim 20 wherein the hydrocarbon resin is grafted with less than 5 wt % maleic anhydride.
- 23. The adhesive composition according to claim 22 wherein the hydrocarbon resin is grafted with from about 2-3 wt % maleic anhydride.
- 24. An article of manufacture comprising at least two substrates bonded by the adhesive composition according to claim 10.
